PLOT SYNOPSIS |
When his experiments into a powerful new anaesthetic go hideously awry, respected physician Dr. Jekyll (ANTHONY PERKINS) takes off into the night, casting aside the shackles of upper-class propriety as he disappears into the shadowy decadent of Whitechapel in pursuit of sensual pleasures under the guise of “Mr. Hyde.” As his wife Elisabeth (GLYNIS BARBER) passes her time in charitable work, rehabilitating the district’s fallen women, Hyde is drawn into an escalating cycle of lust and murder that seems to know no bounds. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 3¾/5 |
This release comes housed in an HD keep case and has a reversible cover. Inside is a booklet containing an essay by Jon Towlson entitled “Jack’s Back: Edge of Sanity’s Return of the Repressed”. Audio Commentary by Writer David Flint and Author/Filmmaker Sean Hogan who dissect the movie providing information on the production, actors and other bits of trivia. Interviews:
All told there is nearly two hours worth of interviews here giving insights into the production from both first and second hand sources, with Kikoine’s comments being the most informative of the bunch. For a somewhat obscure title, nice to see this amount of interviews. Also includes the Theatrical Trailer (0:59). |
VIDEO – 4½/5 |
Arrow Video releases Edge of Sanity onto Blu-ray and is presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio. The 1080p high-definition transfer was taken from a new 2K restoration of a 4K scan of the original camera negative, which was provided by MGM and Deluxe. As it is, this is a very good looking picture, detail is sharp and well defined with the natural film grain and noise still retained and no glaring issues like artifacts, aliasing, dust, dirt or other flaws. |
AUDIO – 4¼/5 |
The disc comes with a PCM 2.0 track which offers up clear enough dialogue and some good depth especially when it came to the music and score. Nothing extraordinary but certainly decent enough as there were no apparent pops or hissing. |
