When Susan Bradley (JUDY GARLAND) responded to an ad in New Mexico for a mail-order bride, she had no idea that her would-be husband was a broken-down cowhand. Instead of returning back home, she takes a job at the local Harvey House restaurant. But the new establishment faces tough resistance from the local saloon owner (JOHN HODIAK) and the town’s streetwise showgirl, Em (ANGELA LANSBURY). VIDEO – 5/5, AUDIO – 4/5 |
The Harvey Girls is presented in the original 1.37 full frame aspect ratio and given a new 1080p high-definition transfer. According to the press release, the picture here underwent a restoration, the transfer taken from a new 4K scan of the original nitrate Technicolor negatives. This is a really impressive picture, detail is very well defined throughout but what stood out was the incredibly vibrant colors which really pops off the screen. Can’t compare with how this looked on DVD, but have to think this is a night and day difference and this nearly 65 year old film has never looked better. The disc comes equipped with a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track which provides good output for the singing from Angela Lansbury as well as the clear dialogue making way through the central speaker. On the slight downside, there was some minor hissing, however nothing that would detract from the enjoyment of the film nor distort any of the on-screen action or conversations. |
