No real surprise that I never heard of the novel it’s based upon, The Sun is Also a Star is a fine romance-drama that never manages to impress beyond a scene or two with leads, yet fans of the genre might get more enjoyment out of it.

THE MOVIE — 3.0/5

Plot Synopsis: College-bound romantic Daniel Bae (CHARLES MELTON) and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley (YARA SHAHIDI) meet — and fall for each other — over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City. Sparks immediately fly between these two strangers, who might never have met had fate not given them a little push. With just hours left on the clock in what looks to be her last day in the U.S., Natasha is fighting against her family’s deportation just as fiercely as she’s fighting her growing feelings for Daniel. Quick Hit Review: Not terribly memorable, The Sun is Also a Star is a breezy romance-drama with two leads — Yara Shahid (Smallfoot) and Charles Melton (TV’s Riverdale) — that didn’t always share great chemistry though there were at least a couple of scenes that showed some promise. The plot itself was engaging and I did at least find their characters to be likeable. Although the studio did give it a fairly wide release, it still only managed a paltry $2.5 million and $4.95 million total, still losing money even with a reasonable $9 million budget (though they also probably put a good amount into the marketing as I remember seeing a trailer at the theater and some TV spots). Kind of a shame as there is some charm to the film, though perhaps this would’ve been better served as a mini-series as, from what I read, there were some side-stories either cut down or removed entirely. The Sun is Also a Star, despites having two actors who don’t always have the best chemistry, is still worth a rental, particularly for the romantics out there. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.0/5 |
The only feature is Love is a Universe featurette. For whatever reason, the digital release also included an additional featurette, a deleted scene and a gag reel. Lame. |
VIDEO – 4.0/5, AUDIO – 4.0/5
|
Warner Brothers forgo a Blu-ray release, likely due to the film’s lackluster box office, and released The Sun is Also a Star only on DVD presented with a 2.39 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio and given a standard but still effective Dolby Digital 5.1 track. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
No real surprise that I never heard of the novel it’s based upon, The Sun is Also a Star is a fine romance-drama that never manages to impress beyond a scene or two with leads Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton, yet fans of the genre might get more enjoyment out of it. The DVD offers good video/audio transfers but the lackluster featurette was disappointing (beyond this not getting a Blu-ray release). |
