Judgment Night isn’t what one call a “smart” thriller or anything but it is awfully fun courtesy of its charming cast headlined by Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Denis Leary (with special mention to Stephen Dorff and Jeremy Piven).

THE MOVIE – 3.75/5

Plot Synopsis: New father Frank (EMILIO ESTEVEZ) departs for a night out, joining friends Mike (CUBA GOODING JR.) and Ray (JEREMY PIVEN) as they head to a boxing match. At the last minute, they are joined by John (STEPHEN DORFF), Frank’s brother. Stuck in gridlock traffic, the guys take a shortcut that gets them lost. In a very dangerous neighborhood, they witness a murder by a gang leader called Fallon (DENIS LEARY). They flee, but Fallon now wants them hunted down and eliminated.

Quick Hit Review: Judgment Night is one of those movies I’ve heard of and even seen on the schedule airing some Saturday night but for one reason or another never had a chance to see. Shame I didn’t see this sooner as this was one hell of a ride excelling more so on its high-caliber cast, for 1993 I suppose, rather than the story which admittedly does get quite convoluted as it went along. Still, it was just an all-around entertaining thriller.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5

No features were included.

VIDEO – 4.0/5, AUDIO – 4.0/5

Despite Warner already releasing this a year ago, Judgment Night now gets the Blu-ray treatment with a new 2018 1080p master and does look quite good. Detail is at least decent albeit not overly sharp while colors appear to be natural and in keeping with the darker tone of this thriller. There might have been a few specs but nothing I’d consider overwhelming and there were no apparent artifacting or aliasing.

The soundtrack meanwhile gets a slight upgrade from an older Dolby Digital 2.0 track to DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 that isn’t anything amazing or filled with incredible depth, but dialogue does sound crisp and clean with no discernible hisses or pops.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, Judgment Night isn’t what one call a “smart” thriller or anything but it is awfully fun courtesy of its charming cast headlined by Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Denis Leary (with special mention to Stephen Dorff and Jeremy Piven). The Blu-ray from Warner’s Archive Collection offers up good video/audio transfers but no bonus features.
