Permanent is a quirky 1980s-era family-comedy that most works thanks to the three leads, but especially the talented youngster Kira McLean. It’s just a light-hearted and well-written film that both teens and parents can appreciate.

Set in 1982 in small town Virginia, Permanent centers around the newly relocated Dickson family, Jeanne and Jim (PATRICIA ARQUETTE, RAINN WILSON) and their 13-year-old daughter Aurelie (KIRA MCLEAN). SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.75/5 |
This release comes with an embossed and semi-reflective slip cover with portraits of the actors set against a hideous 1980s-era green color reminding me of the shag carpet in my childhood home… Deleted/Alternate Scenes (6:05; HD) contains scenes that likely were removed for pacing issues or is repetitive. Getting Permanent with Rainn Wilson (3:12; HD) is a promotional featurette on Wilson and his character and the story. Virginia is for Lovers (1:10; HD) – This is a part pros on the state and part joke featurette. Theatrical Trailer (2:11; HD) Not sure why, but Magnolia seems to be the only studio to still include a BD-Live portal. |
VIDEO – 4.0/5 |
The 1080p high-definition transfer is mostly good looking, thanks to a semi-authentic representation of the early 1980s, the production and costume designs and the matching colors come through rather well while detail is also sharp and well defined. |
AUDIO – 3.5/5 |
The included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is decent enough although given the majority of the film is either filled with dialogue or era-appropriate music/score, so there’s not very much depth but the rear channels does get modest usage. |
OVERALL – 3.0/5 |
Overall, Permanent is a quirky 1980s-era family-comedy that most works thanks to the three leads, but especially the talented youngster Kira McLean. It’s just a light-hearted and well-written film that both teens and parents can appreciate. This Blu-ray release includes some throwaway features while the video/audio transfers were above average. |
