Vikings was never a show I could fully get into, but the performances all around aren’t half bad and, like Game of Thrones, feature some respectable production and costume designs.

THE SEASON

After Ragnar’s (TRAVIS FIMMEL) return to Kattegat escalates tension among his sons, he and Ivar the Boneless (ALEX HOGH) set out to fight the Saxons. Meanwhile, a prophecy that a woman will rule Kattegat deepens the feud between Aslaug (ALYSSA SUTHERLAND) and Lagertha (KATHERYN WINNICK).

SPECIAL FEATURES – 3.0/5

This 3-disc set comes housed in a standard Blu-ray case and comes with a textured, embossed, slip cover with a fold-out front cover revealing a cast shot. There is a Season Play option to watch all of them, even if you have to change discs. Also available are Extended Episodes for each one.

Deleted Scenes (TRT 7:43; HD) are available on various episodes. Kind of wish they were on one disc than spread across all three (and list which scene belongs in which episode).

Episode Commentaries on ‘In the Uncertain Hour Before the Morning’ and ‘All His Angels’ with Creator Michael Hirst and Actor Linus Roache

There are also a few promotional featurettes:

  • The Queen and the Shieldmaiden (8:41; HD) profiles Viking women being as strong warriors as their male counterparts and the characters portrayed by Katheryn Winnick and Alyssa Sutherland.
  • Vikings, Valhalla and the Legacy of Ragnar Lothbrok (9:12; HD) looks at the Viking afterlife and on the character, Lothbrok.

The Journeys of Bjorn Ironside is an interactive feature where you can look at the legends of the adventures of the iconic ship featured on the show.

VIDEO – 4.0/5

Fox unleashes Vikings onto Blu-ray presented in its originally televised 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture for the most part looks pretty good though being a grimy and somewhat dark series, it’s not going to be the most pleasant looking Blu-ray or anything yet detail isn’t bad while colors are on the more muted side, though skin tones look natural.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

Each episode comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track and it’s relatively strong providing clear dialogue levels and the action sequences to feature some nice depth making usage of the front and rear speakers with the LFE channel kicking in for a slight boost.

OVERALL – 2.75/5

Overall, Vikings was never a show I could fully get into, but the performances all around aren’t half bad and, like Game of Thrones, feature some respectable production and costume designs. One other aspect I do not appreciate is the splitting of seasons, as it is, though the video and audio are good and features on the so-so side.
