Overall, not quite as bad as others have suggested, at least what I’ve read online, The Zookeeper’s Wife certainly had an interesting story behind it and despite that and a two-time Academy Award nominee in Jessica Chastain something just didn’t quite click.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

The time is 1939 and the place is Poland, homeland of Antonina Zabinski (JESSICA CHASTAIN) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski (JOHAN HELDENBERGH). The Warsaw Zoo flourishes under Jan’s stewardship and Antonina’s care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (DANIEL BRUHL). The Zabinskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and put into action plans to save the lives of hundreds from what has become the Warsaw Ghetto.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.75/5

This release comes with a title-embossed slip cover. Inside is a redemption code for the Digital HD copy.

Features are limited with 6 Deleted Scenes (3:57; HD), The Making of The Zookeeper’s Wife (7:06; HD) behind-the-scenes featurette and The Zabinski Family (3:57; HD) featurette on the real-life people and what they did during WWII.

VIDEO – 4.0/5

Universal releases The Zookeeper’s Wife onto Blu-ray and is presented with a 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. It’s a pleasant looking picture with sharp detail and some decent colors, though with the war-time setting, they can be muted in keeping with the darker tone with the Nazi invasion.

AUDIO – 4.25/5

The disc comes with a robust DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which, early on at least, seemed basic but once the war elements start, the LFE channel kicks into high gear while dialogue levels are crisp and clean throughout.

OVERALL – 2.5/5

Overall, not quite as bad as others have suggested, at least what I’ve read online, The Zookeeper’s Wife certainly had an interesting story behind it and despite that and a two-time Academy Award nominee in Jessica Chastain, and some impressive set designs and usage of real animals, something just didn’t quite click.
