Who’ll Stop the Rain is based on the novel “Dog Soldiers”, I assume this was titled for the 1970 hit song, but whatever the case, it’s a well made, barely-known, thriller.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

A jaded journalist, John (MICHAEL MORIARTY), and a Vietnam vet, Ray (NICK NOLTE), are adrift after returning home from the war. With not much to lose, they hatch a scheme to smuggle heroin from Vietnam into the U.S., which stands to make them a fortune. Instead, the pair and John’s wife (TUESDAY WELD) find themselves on the run from drug dealers and a crooked DEA agent (ANTHONY ZERBE). Along the way, Ray shows their opponents some of the useful combat skills he picked up in the war.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5

Along with the regular 8-page essay booklet, this comes with an Interview (16:20; HD) with Supervising Editor John Bloom and the Original Theatrical Trailer (2:10; HD).

VIDEO – 4.0/5

Who’ll Stop the Rain arrives on Blu-ray through Screen Archive’s Twilight Time line and is presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. While not a perfect looking picture, there are numerous instances of dust marks, minor scratches and other flaws, detail still is sharp and colors appear natural looking.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

The disc comes with a basic but decently sounding DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track and although hardly dynamic, dialogue levels come through the center channel pretty clearly and when the action does pick up, either overseas or stateside, there is some moderate amount of depth.

OVERALL – 2.5/5

Overall, Who’ll Stop the Rain is based on the novel “Dog Soldiers”, I assume this was titled for the 1970 hit song, but whatever the case, it’s a well made, barely-known, thriller that features solid performances from Nick Nolte and Tuesday Weld. The Blu-ray released by Twilight Time offers up good video/audio transfers but a bit limited with the bonus material.
