Panned by critics (29% on Rotten Tomatoes), Stanley & Iris rests almost entirely on the talent, and charms, of the two leads, Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro, rather than the script. Fans of either of these legendary actors will get something out of this rom-melodrama.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

A slice-of-life story, the film focuses on a hard-working widow (JANE FONDA) in a dying New England town who meets up with a diffident cook (ROBERT DE NIRO). As they warily get to know each other, it’s revealed that Stanley, shy but smart, is also, somehow, illiterate; the tender-hearted but go-getting Iris becomes determined to teach him to read.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5

This release comes with an 8-page essay booklet. The only feature included is an Audio Commentary with Film Historians Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman.

VIDEO – 4.25/5

Twilight Time releases Stanley & Iris onto Blu-ray presented with a 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and given a nice looking 1080p high-definition transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec). This was a fairly impressive transfer where colors are generally bright and detail quite sharp throughout and there’s fine, natural looking, film grain. I did notice some very minor scratches but nothing distracting.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

The movie includes a basic but adequate DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track and with a movie where the bulk is dialogue, it’s perfectly serviceable. There’s not a whole lot of depth but when the score kicks in, the track does come to life.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, panned by critics (29% on Rotten Tomatoes), Stanley & Iris rests almost entirely on the talent, and charms, of the two leads, Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro, rather than the script. Fans of either of these legendary actors will get something out of this rom-melodrama. The Blu-ray released through Twilight Time offers good video/audio transfrers.
