Lucio Fulci’s supernatural thriller, Manhattan Baby (aka Eye of the Evil Dead) has some decently creepy scenes but little else that captured my attention from beginning to end, though any fans of his might get more out of it.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.5/5 |
This 3-disc set (BD, DVD, CD) comes with a nice 18-page essay booklet. Interviews:
Manhattan Baby Suite (8:35; HD) – A live performance by Fabio Frizzi. Rounding things out is the Theatrical Trailer (3:12; HD) and a Poster & Still Gallery. |
VIDEO – 2.75/5 |
Manhattan Baby arrives on Blu-ray presented with a 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec). This is a bit of a mixed bag, while at times it looks ‘OK’, colors tend to be on the drab side and there was plenty instances of film damage (hairlines mainly) and some dust marks and/or scratches. Still, detail wasn’t terrible so considering this was no doubt a low budget flick, the restoration work wasn’t awful (faint praise, I know). |
AUDIO – 3.5/5 |
The disc comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which isn’t anything noteworthy yet effective enough providing for clear dialogue levels and when the supernatural action picks up, along with Fabio Frizzi’s composer, the other channels get some usage but nothing I’d call robust. Still, it’s an efficient lossless track for a movie going on 30+ years and a low budget indie at that. |
OVERALL – 3.0/5 |
Overall, Lucio Fulci’s supernatural thriller, Manhattan Baby (aka Eye of the Evil Dead) has some decently creepy scenes but little else that captured my attention from beginning to end, though any fans of his might get more out of it. This 3-disc release from Blue Underground offers us so-so video, good audio and an OK selection of bonus features to peruse. |
