SEASON SYNOPSIS

John Thackery (CLIVE OWEN) is a brilliant but drug-addled surgeon who pushes the boundaries of medicine, morality and race in 1900s New York. Thackery’s absence (hospitalized for cocaine addiction), a lack of affluent patients and financial missteps have led to a decision by the hospital’s board to shutter the downtown location and move uptown. Algernon Edwards (ANDRE HOLLAND) jockeys to become Thackery’s successor as Chief of Surgery, while fellow doctors, nurses, nuns and others grapple with personal and professional changes.

Quick Hit Review: This second season of “The Knick” just kicks it up a notch from season one. The majority of the characters are fascinating though Owen’s Thackery still shines bright but beyond that, each episode is compelling right up to a shocking, and gnarly season finale that could serve as a series finale as the third season, as of this writing, is still up in the air though executive producer Steven Soderbergh (who also helmed every episode) apparently wants to go to six seasons with the series. But if it were to end here, both seasons are first-rate entertainment from Cinemax.

Episodes:

  1. Ten Knots
  2. You’re No Rose
  3. The Best with the Best to Get the Best
  4. Wonderful Surprises
  5. Whiplash
  6. There Are Rules
  7. Williams and Walker
  8. Not Well at All
  9. Do You Remember Moon Flower?

10. This is All We Are

VIDEO – 4.5/5

Warner Home Video releases “The Knick” onto Blu-ray for its second season presented in its originally televised 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. Although this is a darkly lit show, some color does manage to splash through but it is mostly darker tones. Detail is relatively sharp and is an all around clean transfer, free of aliasing, artifacts or other flaws.

AUDIO – 4.5/5

Each episode comes with a pleasing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track and for the most part, is a fantastic lossless track. The bulk of the show is pretty much dialogue driven so there are some limitations yet the music does provide some depth and that dialogue is crisp and clear throughout with no discernible hisses, as one should expect from a newer television series. This is probably the bigger upgrade from TV to home video.

OVERALL –4.0/5

Overall, “The Knick”: The Complete Second Season (and could be the final season) is another triumph from Cinemax and includes amazing performances by Clive Owen, Andre Holland (who probably was the standout amongst them all), Juliet Rylance and Eve Hewson, though the other supporting members never disappoint either. This Blu-ray set might lack meaty bonus features (though the commentaries are decent), the audio/video transfers are both excellent.
