Barbershop: The Next Cut is the latest installment in the vaunted series and actually might be the best of the four (including the Beauty Shop spin-off). No, the acting isn’t the best as Ice Cube’s range isn’t exactly that great, but the story has a fine emotional core and it’s a solid advancement for these characters.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
|
It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. Calvin (ICE CUBE) and his longtime crew, including Eddie (CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER), are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes. Most noticeably, our once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies (EVE, NICKI MINAJ, etc) bring their own flavor, drama and gossip, challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the group, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and his crew to come together to not only save the shop, but their neighborhood. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5 |
The release is a tad light on features and doesn’t even come with a slip cover… Inside though is the redemption code for the Digital HD copy. The Next Cut: Barbershop Bootcamp (4:34; HD) is a featurette on teaching a couple of the actors who to look like they’re giving a haircut. Deleted Scenes (12:34; HD) are a set of scenes that were left on the cutting room floor with intros by director Malcolm D. Lee. Gag Reel (2:24; HD) Preview – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them |
VIDEO – 4.0/5 |
Warner releases Barbershop: The Next Cut onto Blu-ray presented with a 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. In keeping with the genre, comedy and drama, it’s a fairly well-lighted looking picture with bright colors and decent detail. It’s nothing amazing but satisfying. |
AUDIO – 4.0/5 |
The disc includes a decent enough DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Dialogue levels were crisp and clean and the bulk of the front and rear channels are relegated for the score/soundtrack as well as some ambient, off-screen, noises. As with the video, it’s not reference quality but certainly good enough. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
Overall, Barbershop: The Next Cut is the latest installment in the vaunted series and actually might be the best of the four (including the Beauty Shop spin-off). No, the acting isn’t the best as Ice Cube’s range isn’t exactly that great, but the story has a fine emotional core and it’s a solid advancement for these characters. The Blu-ray released by Warner Home Video offers solid video/audio transfers while falls short in the features department. |
