“Mr. Robot”: Season 1 is a strong show from beginning to end (for the most part) and even with a predictable twist, there was just enough there to enjoy between an interesting story and strong performances from Rami Malek, Christian Slater and Martin Wallström makes this binge-worthy viewing.

Plot Synopsis: Cyber-security engineer by day and vigilante hacker by night, Elliot Alderson (RAMI MALEK) finds himself at a crossroads when the mysterious leader (CHRISTIAN SLATER) of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. Note: Please note that this portion does contain some potential spoilers. Quick Hit Review: “Mr. Robot” is the rare breed of a television series that starts off strong and finishes even stronger. The biggest asset beyond an interesting season-long plot line is the cast, headlined by Rami Malek and Christian Slater, both of whom provide great performances (for which Slater took him the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe). I was glued from the word go and although, especially coming toward the latter half of the season, takes more than a few cues from Fight Club. One other highlight, in such a creepy way, is an actor I believe is on the rise in Martin Wallström, who came across as a version of Hannibal Lector at times. The series, created by Sam Esmail, is fantastic and thanks to the fact it’s only 10 episodes, works so well for binge watching be it either On Demand or the home video release which is how I viewed it. Is it perfect? Not quite but it’s a lot of fun though the “twist” at the end I saw coming probably by episode 3 or 4. Still, I highly recommend “Mr. Robot”. Episodes:

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.0/5 |
This release comes with a semi-glossy, title-embossed, slip cover. Inside is a redemption code for the Digital HD copy. Unfortunately the features are a tad light. We get Deleted Scenes (TRT 13:25; HD) on episodes 2, 4, 7 and 9; a standard Gag Reel (5:16; HD) and a M4k1ng_of_Mr_R0bot.move (12:13; HD) behind-the-scenes featurette covering various topics, primarily the central plot and how creator Sam Esmail came up with the idea. |
VIDEO – 4.5/5 |
Universal uploads “Mr. Robot”: Season 1 onto Blu-ray presented with a 1080p high-definition transfer and shown in its originally televised 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio. Unsurprisingly, this looks quite good showcasing sharp detail throughout, skin tones appear natural and colors generally are bright while darker tones are nice and stark. |
AUDIO – 4.5/5 |
Not to be outdone, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track provides for strong dialogue levels but also has some nice depth between the music which makes good use of the front and rear channels and I did notice the LFE kick in giving it that extra boost that aren’t always present with these TV show releases. |
OVERALL – 4.0/5 |
Overall, “Mr. Robot”: Season 1 is a strong show from beginning to end (for the most part) and even with a predictable twist, there was just enough there to enjoy between an interesting story and strong performances from Rami Malek, Christian Slater and Martin Wallström makes this binge-worthy viewing. The Blu-ray released by Universal has great video and audio transfers but falls a bit short in the features department. |
