Deadly Prey is one of the best bad movies ever made and if it were only that, I’d give it a better rating but most everything on this release was terrible. The video had almost a VHS quality to it and the audio is limited. There are some bonus material so it’s not a complete dud but considering the price, it’s a tad steep and only worth it at a bargain bin cost.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

The sadistic and psychopathic Colonel Hogan (DAVID CAMPBELL) is a mercenary for hire who finds a benefactor in Don Michaelson (TROY DONAHUE), a ruthless businessman in need of skilled killers for a special assignment. It’s a win-win for both sides. Michaelson will finance Hogan’s training camp and Hogan will use his trained mercenaries to help out Michaelson.

Hogan has manpower. What he doesn’t have is the prey to hunt in preparation for the big day. His solution: troll the streets of Los Angeles and randomly abduct people. What Hogan didn’t count on was that one of those people would be Mike Danton (TED PRIOR). Danton, a Marine with killer skills, doesn’t take too kindly to being kidnapped. Hogan, Michaelson and the mercenaries are in for a world of pain.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.0/5

Nothing great but at least there are some features. First up is a Photo Gallery (6:35) of cover artwork, TV shirts, posters, etc; Dubbed Prey (6:09) are dubbing from different countries; Trailer (0:55); Interview (14:46) with Makeup Effects Artist Jack Hojohn; and lastly some Outtakes (3:50).

VIDEO – 1.25/5

Wow, I can say this is one of the worst if not THE worst video transfers I’ve come across. Now, the back cover does state that this was culled from the “best available elements” and “not sourced from an HD Master; remastered from PAL Beta SP” and then “upconverted” to Blu-ray. Needless to say, this 1080p transfer is terrible with little to no detail, colors are somewhat washed out and there are dust marks, dirt and other ailments seen throughout. There are also vertical lines in many shots making for an all around ugly looking picture.

AUDIO – 2.0/5

The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track doesn’t fair a whole lot better with flat dialogue, no depth whatsoever and when the action does pick up, it sounds muffled from the movie’s cheap sound design. On the plus side, what there is, I didn’t notice many instances of crackling so that’s a positive, but that’s about the only good I can say about it…

OVERALL – 2.0/5

Overall, Deadly Prey is one of the best bad movies ever made and if it were only that, I’d give it a better rating but most everything on this release was terrible. The video had almost a VHS quality to it and the audio is limited. There are some bonus material so it’s not a complete dud but considering the price, it’s a tad steep and only worth it at a bargain bin cost.
