Into the Woods is apparently a popular Broadway musical – and is getting a big screen Disney adaptation starring Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp and Chris Pine – but having never seen it before, I found it enjoyable for a musical (not a fan, personally) yet the Blu-ray released by Image is downright terrible with no features and, especially, one of the worst video transfers I’ve come across.

PLOT SUMMARY

Tony Award-winners Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason and the rest of the original Broadway cast weave their magic spell in this presentation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical classic, Into the Woods, a seamless fusion of fairytales that strike at the child’s heart within us all. A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans – all necessary to lift the curse that has kept them childless. They meet up with a beguiling cast of characters.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5

Only thing included is a scene selection menu. Nothing else at all.

VIDEO – 1.5/5

Into the Woods, which was (probably) filmed in 1990, certainly looks it with terrible details, tons of artifacts and pixilation and just an overall presentation, despite a 1080p high-definition transfer, that is dreadful. Honestly, there’s no reason for something recorded on video tape to even get an HD transfer…

AUDIO – 3.0/5

The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track is a bit more serviceable providing for good dialogue/singing levels but still, it’s nothing outstanding and lacks much, if any, depth with everything relegated to the front channels.

OVERALL – 2.5/5

Overall, Into the Woods is apparently a popular Broadway musical – and is getting a big screen Disney adaptation starring Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp and Chris Pine – but having never seen it before, I found it enjoyable for a musical (not a fan, personally) yet the Blu-ray released by Image is downright terrible with no features and, especially, one of the worst video transfers I’ve come across.
