New Year’s Eve is an all around poorly made movie. The writing is lazy, the interconnecting tissue between the ensemble is at best thin and just the overall plot never really had the proper flow; even Valentine’s Day seemed to have a more cohesive story.

Road Trip is a fun movie that unfortunately doesn’t get mentioned with the likes of American Pie or even Van Wilder and indeed it’s not as good as either one yet still provides plenty of laughs and gross-out humor to satisfy fans. The cast shares some great comedic energy and having Amy Smart in the movie doesn’t exactly hurt things either.

Lionsgate has repackaged these re-releases in anticipation for the upcoming Avengers live action summer blockbuster, so if you already owned these you’re getting the exact same content except in a more convenient single Blu-ray case. As for the movies, I enjoyed Ultimate Avengers more than Next Avengers but even so, it’s a good lineup of animation movies.

This Mimic 3-Film Set features one good creature-feature, one lukewarm (at best) sequel and one god-awful flick I don’t care to ever revisit. Fortunately, the video and audio transfers are decent and Lionsgate has ported over all the features from the respective DVD releases. The only thing missing is a digital copy for the first film. I suppose if you’re a fan of the creature-features, then you might get something out of the two sequels otherwise I’d wait to pick this up at a cheap price.

This “High-Powered Action Pack” might not have the greatest movies – Equilibrium and The Lookout are the best – but at a low SRP of $30, it comes to $5 per movie and maybe less depending on which store you go to (i.e. Best Buy had it for $10), so if you’ve enjoyed any of these and don’t care about features or average audio/video transfers, then by all means check it out.

Haywire is one of those movies that should’ve been a lot more fun than it actually was. The action scenes are well done and the fight sequences are realistic and not overdone to the extreme that you often see in over-the-top Hollywood flicks. However, from the get-go, the movie never has that energy or drive that makes one care about any of these characters, made harder when the supporting cast is only in it for 10-15 minutes at a time.

While it’s nice to see four of these Prophecy movies in high-def, albeit they aren’t a significant upgrade over an upconverted DVD transfer, Echo Bridge failed to port over the second movie of the series and instead give fans an incomplete collection where two movies are acceptable thanks in large part to Christopher Walken and two where the vet actor doesn’t make an appearance which makes them less than thrilling viewing.

The Descendants  is propelled by a powerful and well-written screenplay, some solid performances from the supporting cast and an understated but amazing one by George Clooney, perhaps his best, if not most poignant, in a long while. The Blu-ray itself offers up nice video and audio transfers while the features, although nice, are much to be desired.

Chinatown is a classic film noir featuring excellent performances, an engrossing story and impressive camera work. The Blu-ray is a bit on the disappointing side if only because it appears DNR was applied on the video but even so, it’s a fine step up from its DVD counterparts while the lossless audio sounds good. The features are also well done including an interesting feature-length documentary on the aqueduct.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a film that personally offended me, not so much for its use of 9/11 (albeit it doesn’t sit well) but due to a manipulative script, obnoxious, annoying and illogical characters and some of the poorest on-screen chemistry I’ve seen in a while mainly between Oskar and his father which looked and sounded entirely contrived.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is the kind of film that adults will only want to view once while their kids will want to listen to those high-pitched songs over and over. I don’t have any kids but God bless all who do and put up with dreck like this. That said, while it is bad, it’s also mostly harmless; I would suggest having kids watch some other family film, however.
