What if ghostly images and abominations haunting our collective nightmares actually exist?<\/em> Writer\/director Adam Green sets out to make a documentary exploring this tantalizing premise after being contacted by a mysterious man named William Dekker (RAY WISE). Dekker explains he can prove that \u201cmonsters are real\u201d and insists these grotesque creatures are forgotten, hideously deformed humanoids inhabiting a vast, underground metropolis. Determined to expose the truth, Green embarks on a bone-chilling odyssey and gets more than he bargains for when he dares to go Digging Up the Marrow<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 3.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One thing you can count on in a release of an Adam Green film, he does give us some features where other regular RLJ releases tend to be barebones.<\/p>\n

Audio Commentary<\/span><\/strong> with Writer\/Director Adam Green, Artist Alex Pardee, Cinematographer Will Barratt and Actor Ray Wise.<\/p>\n

Deleted\/Extended Scenes (30:43; HD)<\/span><\/strong> are some (i.e. a ton) excised footage, and even some dailies from the first cut filmed years ago, removed for a variety of reasons but mostly for pacing.<\/p>\n

Monsters of the Marrow (28:32; HD)<\/span><\/strong> is a behind-the-scenes featurette and includes interviews with the filmmakers.<\/p>\n

VIDEO \u2013 3.75\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

RLJ Entertainment releases Digging Up the Marrow<\/em><\/strong> onto Blu-ray presented with a 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. Given this was in all likelihood was shot digitally, the transfer is absolutely clean and brilliantly bright in some scenes; colors and skin tones appear to be well balanced and details look decent enough. I saw no major instances of aliasing, artifacts or banding making for a fine HD transfer.

AUDIO \u2013 4.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track isn\u2019t entirely dynamic but certainly effective enough. Dialogue levels sound nice and clear throughout, if not topping out here are there in keeping with on-the-spot recordings for the \u201cdocumentary.\u201d Where this lossless track comes to life through some effective sound effects which makes good use of the front and, especially, rear channels.<\/p>\n

OVERALL \u2013 2.5\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Overall, Digging Up the Marrow<\/em><\/strong> had an interesting idea being a mixture of fantasy and horror and putting a mockumentary twist on both and while Adam Green proves yet again to be an affable guy (as demonstrated in his numerous commentary tracks), the plot never quite gels though I can\u2019t say it\u2019s not at least worth a rental. The Blu-ray (released exclusively for Amazon Prime members) has a fair number of features and the video\/audio transfers are both decent enough.<\/p>\n
