Plot Outline: Equus<\/em><\/strong> is director Sidney Lumet\u2019s adaptation of Peter Shaffer\u2019s award-winning hit play about a psychiatrist (RICHARD BURTON) attempting to help a damaged boy (PETER FIRTH) who as committed an unspeakable crime: blinding several horses with a spear. Before long, the melancholy therapist can\u2019t help feeling that the disturbed young man has a stronger grasp on the passionate intensity of life than he does, himself.<\/p>\n

SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 3.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The release includes an informative and generally entertaining Audio Commentary<\/strong><\/span> with Film Historians Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman; an Isolated Score Track<\/strong><\/span> and the Theatrical Trailer (2:00; HD)<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Also included is In From the Cold: The World of Richard Burton<\/em> (2:06:00; HD)<\/strong><\/span>, a 1988 documentary on Burton that is very well made and given an HD transfer, for what that\u2019s worth, and an DTS-HD MA track.<\/p>\n

Twilight Time releases Equus<\/em><\/strong> onto Blu-ray presented with a 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and a splendid 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture is nothing short of remarkable with excellent detail levels throughout, a modest amount of natural film grain and bright colors which come through vibrantly and with a blast.<\/p>\n

AUDIO \u2013 3.75\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Mono DTS-HD Master Audio track may not be anything remarkable but it gets the job done with clear dialogue while other elements from the soundtrack and other on-screen action coming across with some decent depth for a singular channel.<\/p>\n

OVERALL \u2013 4.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Overall, Equus<\/em><\/strong> is an intense and powerful drama featuring amazing performances, both of whom nominated for an Academy Award, from Richard Burton and Peter Firth. It\u2019s not a movie for everybody but I found it to be disturbing yet engrossing through and through. The Blu-ray released by Twilight Time has good audio and video transfers while the special features, albeit limited, are well worth it especially the 2-hour documentary.<\/p>\n
