THE MOVIE<\/strong> \u2013 3.75\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ensemble movies are often a mixed bag because they\u2019re more focused on bringing together known and\/or famous actors together rather than a cohesive story created to force the characters to have any sort of connection so the audience will in the end go, \u201cAh!\u201d Admittedly, as much as I have enjoyed Playing by Heart<\/i><\/b> over the years, the connective tissue writer\/director Willard Carroll puts forth does become a tad much, as are a clich\u00e9 or two… The film\u2019s saving grace is a solid cast, however.<\/p>\n

There are several almost vignettes to Playing by Heart<\/i><\/b> all brought together in the end, but I will leave that to anyone who hasn\u2019t seen the movie yet. Joan (ANGELINA JOLIE) is a young, strong woman who loves the night life and clubbing and meets quiet, sensitive Keenan (RYAN PHILLIPPE) who is reluctant to become involved with Joan due to something in his past; Meredith (GILLIAN ANDERSON) is a theatre director scorned by men in the past so she tries to resist the charms and pursuit of Trent (JON STEWART); Hugh (DENNIS QUIAD) is a new acting student stuck in a lifeless marriage with his wife, Gracie (MADELEINE STOWE) who is having an affair with priest Roger (ANTHONY EDWARDS); Mildred (ELLEN BURSTYN) is a loving mother at the hospital bedside of her gay son, Mark (JAY MOHR), dying of AIDS; and last are Paul (SEAN CONNERY) and Hannah (GENA ROWLANDS) who have been married for many years and plan on renewing their vows but face their biggest challenge when he confesses to having an affair years earlier.<\/p>\n

The characters all have one thing, or people, in common but as I said, I\u2019ll save that for the viewer. First, I will admit where the film does falter somewhat is with the Mildred\/Mark storyline. While both Burstyn and Mohr give brave performances, it\u2019s also a tad clich\u00e9d since I assume the man dying of AIDS story was in vogue in the mid to late 90s thanks in part to Tom Hanks\u2019 Oscar-winning performance in 1993\u2019s Philadelphia<\/i>. Of course you can also exchange AIDS with another disease, so long as you have a character dying to pull at the audiences\u2019 heartstrings. Another story thread which doesn\u2019t exactly ring true is that between Gracie and Roger, not because Roger is a priest but compared with the others, it came across weak in the acting arena.<\/p>\n

The film, though, excels thanks in large part to a fun but emotional performance from a then relatively unknown Angelina Jolie. At the time, Jolie had been a several films but she still was under the radar appearing in various films such as Cyborg 2<\/i>, Hackers<\/i>, Foxfire<\/i> and Playing God<\/i> before finding stardom with 1999\u2019s Girl, Interrupted<\/i> for which she won an Academy Award as well as The Bone Collector<\/i> alongside Denzel Washington. Her story with Ryan Phillippe, who probably gives one of his better performances alongside Cruel Intentions<\/i>, is perhaps the most interesting of the bunch and best acted as well.<\/p>\n

The other storylines are well acted though my second favorite would have to be Meredith and Trent mainly because when I saw this I was still into \u201cThe X-Files\u201d so seeing Gillian Anderson outside of her Scully character was fun to see combined with seeing Stewart in a feature film versus on his \u201cDaily Show\u201d (prior to Playing by Heart<\/i><\/b> he also appeared in The Faculty<\/i>). Obviously \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d came about years later, but from the prism of time, it\u2019s interesting to see (just like how Greg Kinnear began as a late night show host before moving onto acting).<\/p>\n

Playing by Heart<\/i><\/b> isn\u2019t a great film but one that I can watch again and again throughout the years, not unlike You\u2019ve Got Mail<\/i>, two films that are nowhere near perfect yet thanks to the chemistry with the characters, you have a good time. If you still haven\u2019t seen it, give it a shot either on DVD or on cable where I tend to see it on the grid every so often.<\/p>\n

VIDEO \u2013 1.5\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, via Miramax, releases Playing by Heart<\/i><\/b> on Blu-ray with what I consider the worst looking 1080p transfer I\u2019ve come across… ever. Just like the DVD released back in 2011, this has a heavy amount of interlacing but worse yet, the picture itself is so bland and the colors look pale and lifeless. I also noticed, around the edges at least, some signs of maybe sharpening done. Another pox against it is there are many instances of dirt or scratch marks littered in many scenes.<\/p>\n

If there is anything positive, and it\u2019s quite minimal, it appears as if the aspect ratio is finally corrected with its original 2.20 presentation (the original DVD was non-anamorphic 1.78, the re-release DVD was 1.85 but off-center).
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

AUDIO \u2013 2.5\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Not doing the disc any favors, I was marginally excited that this release was getting a lossless 5.1 DTS-HD MA track but it was tempered once the movie started as it sounded utterly soft from beginning to end. Everything from the dialogue levels were far too quiet while the surrounds, while there, was more anemic than anything. I can\u2019t even say this is an upgrade over the DVD re-release\u2019s stereo track, which is saying something.<\/p>\n

OVERALL \u2013 2.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Overall, I enjoy Playing by Heart<\/i><\/b> for what it is, a fun, if not overly dramatic, ensemble with some good performances as well as clich\u00e9d storytelling, especially in one of the storylines. That being said, this is the poorest excuse of a Blu-ray release I\u2019ve ever come across. The video has interlacing issues not to mention dirt and scratch marks while the audio is, at best, average and that\u2019s being generous. The only way I\u2019d recommend picking up this release is if it\u2019s cheap (i.e. <$5) and you don\u2019t already own either of the DVD releases.<\/p>\n
