THE MOVIE<\/strong> \u2013 2.5\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

L.A., doesn\u2019t measure up to much in both the story and performers; in fact it kind of reminded me of Ocean\u2019s Twelve<\/em> of all things as it\u2019s a film where many famous actors are having a good time while the audience merely watches on in silence. Since I\u2019m pretty bored at the moment, I will try to rehash the story and the many characters that dart in and out, so please excuse the multiple paragraphs…<\/p>\n

Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em><\/strong> opens up with an introduction of Reed (ASHTON KUTCHER), a floral shop owner making a surprise proposal to his girlfriend, Morley (JESSICA ALBA), who enthusiastically accepts. Reed then goes into work with buddy and co-worker Alphonos (GEORGE LOPEZ).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile we also meet Julia (JENNIFER GARNER) a teacher and her boyfriend\/doctor Harrison (PATRICK DEMPSEY in a taxing role). We discover then that Julia and Reed are in fact best friends.<\/p>\n

In another storyline is Kelvin (JAMIE FOXX), a man who hates the holiday and fits his relationships to avoid it all together. Kelvin is a secondary sports reporter who is ordered by the station manager (KATHY BATES) to do some man on the street interviews about the holiday.<\/p>\n

In a related story, there\u2019s star quarterback Sean (ERIC DANE) who recently lost in the playoffs and whose career is on the decline. After an unflattering story, he calls PR rep Kara (JESSICA BIEL) to handle the situation while seeking advice on future prospects from his agent, Paula (QUEEN LATIFAH).<\/p>\n

Of course, we also get a cute story of a little boy (BRYCE ROBINSON) \u2013 who is in Julia\u2019s class \u2013 wanting to get a special valentine\u2019s present to a girl he likes so he goes to Reed\u2019s shop to get the present. The boy is the grandson of Edgar (HECTOR ELIZONDO) and Estelle (SHIRLEY MacCLAINE), a happily married couple.<\/p>\n

In the high school realm are athletes Willy (TAYLOR LAUTNER) and Felicia (TAYLOR SWIFT) and her best friend, Grace (EMMA ROBERTS) who is planning on having sex for the first time with her boyfriend, Alex (CARTER JENKINS) before they head off for college.<\/p>\n

Another sub-story involves Jason (TOPHER GRACE) and Liz (ANNE HATHAWAY) in a newish relationship. Jason works in the mailroom for the same company where Paula works and lo-and-behold, Liz is temping for Paula\u2019s secretary who took the day off. Liz, however, has a little secret which we learn early on.<\/p>\n

And last, in what is easily the weakest of the storylines in the plot we meet Holden (BRADLEY COOPER) and Kate (JULIA ROBERTS) on an airplane. Kate is heading home after a 11-month stint in the military overseas.<\/p>\n

I believe I got everybody covered and as you might expect, each little story has some connection with the other (even outside of what I\u2019ve pointed out). I guess they\u2019re fun connections on some levels, but hardly anything clever and a few are far too predictable. Then you add in the built-in elements of the genre and as I\u2019ve written before, I need characters to care about in order to overlook all the clich\u00e9s and\/or genre staples; and thanks to an absorbent amount of well known actors, I could hardly connect with any of them.<\/p>\n

The only character that could remotely be called the \u201cmain\u201d focus for the film would be Ashton Kutcher\u2019s flower-man, Reed as he both opens and closes out the movie and is featured more throughout while others sometimes feel more like cameo roles than anything else (especially Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts\u2019 section). But for his part, Kutcher does a decent job with a limited role so Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em><\/strong> has that going for it, but that in itself says something about the film as a whole, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

The rest of the cast each basically gets an equal amount of time to display more one-note character traits like Jamie Foxx\u2019s struggles about the holiday or Jessica Biel and her own issues with the day; a story involving four teens that seem to come from some poorly developed WB teen drama, etc. You get the idea. Other than Kutcher, Jennifer Garner seems to get come out better than the rest, especially the female cast: Jessica Alba only has a few lines and has some odd last scene walking down the street while Anne Hathaway gets to get dirty with her phone sex side job and Queen Latifah is a barrel of laughs as a powerful sports agent (yes, I\u2019m being sarcastic). The only thing they, including Taylor Swift, have in common is they are great to look at, but that\u2019s about it since we only get slivers of each character before it\u2019s off to another storyline.<\/p>\n

I realize that much like other ensembles, mainly New York, I Love You<\/em> and Paris, I Love You<\/em> (focusing on the different sections of their respective cities), Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em><\/strong> is all about love and what it does to people of all persuasions and sexual orientations, but unfortunately this film, unlike the I Love You <\/em>films and all their flaws, doesn\u2019t have an interesting connective tissue to keep it together.<\/p>\n

The film was directed by Garry Marshall who continues his interesting path after the surprise 1990 hit, Pretty Woman<\/em> which was promptly followed by some real gems like the Dan Aykroyd\/Rosie O\u2019Donnell S&M comedy, Exit to Eden<\/em>, Greg Kinnear\u2019s Dear God<\/em> and the forced Gere\/Roberts reunion movie, Runaway Bride<\/em> plus a few other forgettable films (Princess Diaries 1 & 2<\/em> and Georgia Rule<\/em>). I don\u2019t know if Marshall just got lucky with the magic the Pretty Woman<\/em> stars displayed on the big screen or what, but Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em><\/strong> only shows that he can get some well known actors together, but there\u2019s not a whole lot of magic in it…<\/p>\n

I know what Marshall, the producers and even the writers were going after and it was a valiant effort to gather the star power they did, but it hardly amounts to much. Given the film went on to make over $200 million worldwide, it\u2019s only a certainty in this sequel\/remake safe Hollywood world that a sequel, currently titled New Years Eve<\/em>, is in development. I certainly hope it has something more to offer other than more clich\u00e9s and cardboard characters we couldn\u2019t care less about.<\/p>\n

SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 3.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For the second release in a row, after Edge of Darkness<\/em><\/strong> (and one is not included for Invictus<\/em><\/strong> either) Warner has dropped the slip cover which had been a staple with their day and date releases.<\/p>\n

Feature Commentary<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Director Garry Marshall provides the commentary which I guess I should be thankful for given lately Warner\u2019s Blu-ray releases haven\u2019t featured many commentaries. If you ever have listened to one of Gary Marshall\u2019s commentaries before, you know it\u2019s going to be fairly dry but he does provide some obvious info on making the film. ** Blu-ray Exclusive **<\/strong><\/p>\n

Blooper Reel (5:47; HD)<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Flubbed lines, prop malfunctions and all those great things make up this reel with the occasional interjection by Garry Marshall from his office. All I will say this is as funny as the movie… ** Blu-ray Exclusive **<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deleted Scenes (22:28; HD)<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 There are 14 deleted scenes that you can either play with or without introductions by Garry Marshall (the runtime is with his intros). Given the movie was already 125-minutes long, and the fact it\u2019s clich\u00e9d as it is, it\u2019s obvious these needed to be taken out.<\/p>\n

The Stars Confess Their Valentine\u2019s Day Stories (6:27; HD)<\/span><\/strong> \u2013It\u2019s your typical little featurette where the cast talk about their experiences on the holiday; their best and worst stories and the anxiety for the day. ** Blu-ray Exclusive **<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Garry Factor (5:03; HD)<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 So, why did this star-studded cast want to do this movie? Because of director Garry Marshall, that\u2019s why! We get to hear from the cast about their feelings on Mr. Marshall, their favorite movies and all that kind of stuff. ** Blu-ray Exclusive **<\/strong><\/p>\n

We also get a music video (3:10; HD)<\/span><\/strong> by Jewel (** Blu-ray Exclusive **<\/strong>) and a Sneak Peek Trailer (1:20; HD)<\/span><\/strong> to Sex in the City 2<\/em>. Just great.<\/p>\n

Last is a DVD\/Digital Copy<\/span><\/strong> disc. ** Blu-ray Exclusive **<\/strong><\/p>\n

VIDEO \u2013 3.5\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em><\/strong> is presented with a 1.78 aspect ratio (1.85 theatrically but opened up for home video release) and in 1080p high-definition. For a newer movie, I wasn\u2019t overly impressed with the video but I also don\u2019t have the same expectations as this isn\u2019t going to have the visual flair compared with other films. The movie is also surprisingly darker than what I would expect from a rom-com, skin tones are also all over the place and not quite natural while the detail levels in general tend to be on the softer side. That said, I\u2019d give this transfer a passable grade, but still disappointing for a new release.

AUDIO \u2013 3.75\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track meanwhile isn\u2019t going to knock your socks off either but unlike the video, I kind of expected it as I knew this would primarily be a dialogue-filled movie, which it is. But the voices are easy to understand and the numerous amount of clich\u00e9d love songs spread throughout gives it a modest amount of depth. Of course, the subwoofer rarely gets used but gives a slight boom during those songs.<\/p>\n

OVERALL \u2013 2.75\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em><\/strong> may be a two-hour clich\u00e9 but at the same time it\u2019s fairly harmless and might please some people out there, but for me, I like my romantic-comedies to have, oh I don\u2019t know, a little comedy thrown in there. I know… that\u2019s a silly thing to expect. The Blu-ray itself is also a disappointment with a merely passable video transfer, a decent audio track and some subpar extras, most of which are exclusives.<\/p>\n
