John Frankenheimer\u2019s Ronin<\/em><\/strong> features probably one of the best car chases (laughable pyrotechnics and all) alongside Bullitt<\/em>, The French Connection<\/em> and The Bourne Ultimatum<\/em>. Unfortunately I don\u2019t think this film gets the attention it deserves because in my book, Ronin<\/em><\/strong> is one of my personal favorites.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that the movie is anything special, it really isn\u2019t. Sure, De Niro is great and the supporting cast of Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd and Natascha McElhone are all fantastic but the plot, an espionage movie that may or may not be an espionage movie, is well constructed.<\/p>\n

The plot is about a group of individuals brought together in France by unknown persons (revealed to the audience anyway) to steal a briefcase with unknown contents, a briefcase wanted by Russians who want it very badly and can pay but also by the Irish who want just as bad but don\u2019t have the cash…<\/p>\n

The team hired to get this briefcase have various skills: ex-CIA agent Sam (ROBERT DE NIRO) is an all-around skills man who can dissect situations; Frenchman Vincent (JEAN RENO) is there to provide location support and is able to get the team anything they need; Gregor (STELLAN SKARSGARD) is the techie able to program computers and get coordinates and whatnot; Larry (SKIPP SUDDUTH) is a skilled driver; and the \u201cteam\u201d leader is Deirdre (NATASHCA MCELHONE) is the woman in charge of them all and gives them any need-to-know information on the heist.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ronin<\/em><\/strong> certainly is not one of the best espionage movies ever made, hell probably not even one of the best, but every time I\u2019ve watched it (now 5 or 6 times over the years), I\u2019ve enjoyed every minute of it. And it comes as no surprise that when watching you can immediately feel the presence of one David Mamet; he\u2019s credited as Richard Weisz due to issues with the WGA. You don\u2019t have to look hard for his contribution to the dialogue in classic Mamet fashion: \u201cWhat’s the color of the boathouse at Hereford?\u201d or \u201cWhenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt. That is the first thing they teach you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know some take issue with the story and the twists and turns (the assassination of a figure skater), I\u2019ve immensely enjoyed this film not only for its sharp and crisp dialogue, as realistically unrealistic as it is, but for the shear screen presence of Robert De Niro and Jean Reno, two veteran actors who have some of the best onscreen friendship chemistry.<\/p>\n

The rest of the cast are actually not too bad. First we have the always great Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, post James Bond villain Sean Bean in a small thankless (though funny) role, plus Jonathan Pryce and the lovely Natascha McElhone round out a solid cast.<\/p>\n

As I said, this is not a perfect film with some flaws, but for its genre and a generally fantastic cast along with the late John Frankenheimer\u2019s fantastic chase sequence, Ronin<\/em><\/strong> is well worth your time if you still have not seen it. This is a personal favorite of mine and even after seeing it several times, I\u2019m certain I\u2019ll watch and enjoy it over and over in the future.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Audio Commentary<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Director John Frankenheimer. The late filmmaker, who died in 2002, offers up an interesting, if not a tad dry, track giving details on his process, style and other tid-bits.<\/p>\n

Close-Up (31:27)<\/u><\/strong> is a new, and lengthy, interview with cinematographer Robert Fraisse as he reflects on his long and varied career.<\/p>\n

In the Cutting Room (18:56)<\/u><\/strong> is an archive interview with Tony Gibbs as he talks about how he approaches the editing of the film.<\/p>\n

Natascha McElhone: An Actor\u2019s Process (13:57)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 The actress explains her role in the film and approach to the character.<\/p>\n

Composing the Ronin Score (11:52)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Composer Elia Cmiral explains his process of creating this unique score, which is incredible and listen to all of the time on my iPod.<\/p>\n

The Driving of Ronin<\/em> (15:29)<\/u><\/strong> explores the stunt vehicle work that is one of the more prominent aspects of the film. Probably my favorite of these featurettes.<\/p>\n

Through the Lens (17:57)<\/u><\/strong> is an older interview with Robert Fraisse as he explains his process and working with director John Frankenheimer.<\/p>\n

Venice Film Festival Interviews (20:41)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 De Niro, Reno and McElhone talk about working on the film. Nothing overly fascinating but was an okay watch.<\/p>\n

Ronin<\/u><\/em><\/strong>: Filming in the Fast Lane (17:45)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 This is your standard featurette with some behind-the-scenes footage and on-set interviews.<\/p>\n

Alternate Ending (1:49)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 While interesting, I\u2019m glad this was not used, but still worth watching; it involves Deidra visiting the caf\u00e9 but before she can meet Sam, is kidnapped by her former Irish terrorist colleagues.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Now marking its third time on Blu-ray (with a 4K release at the same time, which I did not receive to review sadly), Kino Lorber releases Ronin<\/em><\/strong> with the back cover stating it\u2019s a new HD Master from a 4K scan of the Original Camera Negative. Having reviewed the Arrow release which also had a new transfer, I can\u2019t say there\u2019s much of a difference. However, this one still looks good with sharp detail and well balanced colors, albeit on the darker spectrum. If you didn\u2019t already own the Arrow version, this is a fine pick-up, or perhaps spend a bit more and just get the 4K UHD copy which comes with this Blu-ray disc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The Blu-ray comes with a lossless DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio that sounds fine and everything is pretty clear from the dialogue through the center speaker to the sound effects which make use of the other speakers. However, I also was not blown away by any of it. I thought the audio was fairly lightweight compared to what I expected from a DTS HD track.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
