THE MOVIE \u2014 2\u00bc\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Plot Synopsis: <\/strong>U.S. Marshal Mason Pollard (DOMINIC SHERWOOD) specializes in \u201cerasing\u201d people \u2014 faking the deaths of high-risk witnesses. With the technological advances of the last 25 years, the game has upgraded, and it\u2019s just another day at the office when he\u2019s assigned to Rina Kimura (JACKY LAI), a crime boss\u2019 wife who\u2019s decided to turn state\u2019s evidence. As the two flee to Cape Town, South Africa, with a team of merciless assassins on their trail, Pollard discovers he\u2019s been set up. Double-crossed and fueled by adrenaline, he needs to be at the top of his game, or he\u2019ll be the one who\u2019s erased. Permanently.<\/p>\n

Review: <\/strong>When Eraser<\/em> was released back in 1996 (25+ years now, yikes!), it managed to take in $242 million worldwide off of a $100 million budget, so not a big loss but not enough of a success to make it a franchise, not to mention only a month prior Mission: Impossible <\/em>was released which raked in $458 million off of an $80 million budget, and I remember the comparisons back then. Of course, M:I<\/em> did not have a poor CGI crocodile…<\/p>\n

Considering the original Eraser<\/em> was entertaining but nothing special, I\u2019m perfectly okay when movies of that caliber are remade or rebooted but like The Transporter: Refueled<\/em>, Eraser: Reborn<\/em><\/strong> is a movie that might\u2019ve been competently shot but the script, written by Michael Weiss (I\u2019ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em>, The Butterfly Effect 2<\/em>, Hostel Part III<\/em>, The Scorpion King 4<\/em>) and dialogue was shoddy being delivered by a cast of bland, uncharismatic actors, led by Dominic Sherwood, one of the leads of a show called Shadowhunters<\/em> (which aired on Freeform in the U.S.) who doesn\u2019t have much range or worse, unlike Schwarzenegger, personality.<\/p>\n

The remainder of the supporting cast was just as unremarkable. Jacky Lai plays the woman whom Pollard is protecting and once again, like the 1996 original, Pollard\u2019s mentor (McKinley Belcher III of Ozark<\/em>) turns out to be the big baddie, though not only was it predictable, they at least didn\u2019t reveal it for the third act, and made the revelation fairly early on. Outside of those two, everyone else is even more forgettable.<\/p>\n

Eraser: Reborn<\/em><\/strong> was directed by John Pogue. When his name came up in the opening I recognized it but couldn\u2019t pinpoint what else he had worked on. Looking him up afterward, forgot he was the writer behind The Skulls<\/em> (as well as U.S. Marshals<\/em>) and had previously helmed some gems including Quarantine 2<\/em> and Deep Blue Sea 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This is one to skip as there\u2019s really no entertainment value, even if I can commend the production for employing some practical pyrotechnic effects.<\/p>\n

The only feature is The Warrior and the Witness: Making Eraser: Reborn<\/em> (9:12)<\/u><\/strong> with some behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Warner Bros. Entertainment releases Eraser: Reborn<\/em><\/strong> onto Blu-ray shown with a 2.39 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture here looks fine if not especially impressive, though detail on the close-ups was okay and colors are well balanced throughout. But like the movie itself, it\u2019s all pretty bland, and flat, looking.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The movie includes an acceptable but unimposing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Dialogue does come across the center speaker with good clarity however with the action sequences, the depth is lackluster, and that includes some of the explosions where even the LFE channel barely kicks on.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
