Synopsis: <\/strong>The science fiction TV franchise “Star Trek” has had a seismic impact on the lives of its most obsessive fans. Known as Trekkies, these diehard devotees wear their Starfleet costumes in public, speak in Klingon and even redecorate their offices and homes to mimic the look of the “Star Trek” world. In this documentary, former “Star Trek” actress Denise Crosby travels the country interviewing famous fans like Barbara Adams and exploring the reasons behind the show’s enduring appeal.<\/p>\n

Quick Hit Review: <\/strong>I\u2019m not much of a Star Trek<\/em> fan though have enjoyed many episodes from The Next Generation<\/em> and even liked elements of the J.J. Abrams versions, flawed as they may be. However there\u2019s no denying the Star Trek<\/em> fandom is interesting and while it can\u2019t rival Star Wars<\/em>, they are (or maybe were?) a passionate group and this documentary released 25 years ago gives a glimpse into them and not in a mocking way either. Although not as polished compared with the few other documentaries I\u2019ve watched over the years, this one is nevertheless entertaining and engaging.<\/p>\n

This documentary was co-executive produced and hosted by Denise Crosby who left the show as a series regular after only one season (she would make a handful of appearances in subsequent seasons), and she seems to have good rapport with the interviewees.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This 25th Anniversary release includes \u201cA Trek Back\u201d (20:05)<\/u><\/strong>, a new interview with Denise Crosby and director Roger Nygard looking back on how the documentary got made; and the Theatrical Trailer (1:57)<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Shout Factory releases Trekkies<\/em><\/strong> onto Blu-ray for I believe the first time and is shown in its original 1.33 full frame aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. As this was a movie shot on film going back 25 years ago, I didn\u2019t expect very much from the video however for the most part it does look fairly good. Detail is okay as is the sharpness for most of the interview footage while colors appear nicely balanced throughout.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The movie includes both a 5.1 and 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio track and both are standard but effective showcasing clear enough dialogue and some adequate depth for the rear channels. Nothing outstanding but all things considered a fine lossless track.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Overall, Trekkies<\/em><\/strong> is a fun and interesting look at the Star Trek<\/em> fandom, at least in the late 90s (though there\u2019s still a strong contingent today). Hosted by Denise Crosby, this is a documentary well worth checking out.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
