Otsuya (AYAKO WAKAO) is the daughter of a rich merchant, who is tempted by her lover, Shinsuke (AKIO HASEGAWA), a lowly employee of her father’s, to elope. During their flight, Otsuya’s beauty attracts the gaze of Seikichi, a mysterious master tattooist who sees her pristine white skin as the perfect canvas for his art. The image of the large demonic spider that he emblazons across Otsuya’s back marks her as the property of another man, radically altering her relationships with all around her as her personality transforms under its influence.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This single-disc release comes in a clear HD keep case and inside is a nice booklet<\/strong> containing essays.<\/p>\n

Audio Commentary<\/u><\/strong> by Japanese cinema scholar David Desser. As solo tracks go, this isn\u2019t half bad. Desser keeps things lively yet still gives details on the movie like cinematography, characters and other aspects.<\/p>\n

Introduction (9:50)<\/u><\/strong> by Japanese cinema expert Tony Rayns, offering his insights into the film.<\/p>\n

Out of the Darkness (13:04)<\/u><\/strong> is a new video essay by Asian cinema scholar Daisuke Miyao on the cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

Irezumi<\/em><\/strong> debuts on Blu-ray for the first time in North America where it\u2019s presented in the original 2.35 aspect ratio and has been given a 1080p high-definition transfer, taken from a newly restored scan in 4K from the original 35mm negative. The picture looks quite glorious in HD, detail is relatively sharp throughout and colors appear to be nicely balanced and vibrant but still in keeping with how it was shot and for its timeframe.<\/p>\n

The disc comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track. Nothing in the notes on this, but as it stands, not at all a bad lossless track. Dialogue comes across with fine clarity as did the music which did top out a time or two but otherwise I found it to be a clean track.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
