They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (JOHN LITHGOW). Determined to save their home \u2013 not to mention his \u2013 Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona (CAMERON DIAZ) to be Farquaad&#8217;s bride. Rescuing the Princess may be small compared to her deep, dark secret.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quick Hit Review: <\/strong>As far as second-tier (i.e. non-Pixar) animated films go, Shrek is one of the better films out there and nearly a decade later, still plays well both in terms of animation and comedy, this despite some old references such as Fiona\u2019s mid-air kick spoofed from The Matrix; aside from that other early 2000s references work on their own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I actually had not seen Shrek in many years but still found it quite funny and as someone who isn\u2019t the biggest fan of Mike Meyers (though I don\u2019t hate him either), this is one of the funniest roles (albeit just voice) that he\u2019s done even if it\u2019s somewhat a carryover from his Austin Powers movies. Not to be outdone, Eddie Murphy also gives one of his better performances in yet another example of perfection in voice casting. Inside is a redemption code for the <strong>Digital HD<\/strong> copy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>DISC 1 (4K UHD):<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><u>Shrek\u2019s Interactive Journey<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Here you get a map where you can go to various locations and check out the artwork created and those that \u201chelped inspire the creation of Shrek\u2019s world\u201d. Nothing really noteworthy here and in fact could\u2019ve just been called an artwork gallery instead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Spotlight on Donkey (11:38)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 This featurette obviously focuses on the Eddie Murphy-voiced Donkey character. The cast and crew members talk about the character and how Murphy did a great job voicing him. This is a mixture of new interviews with archival ones plus scenes from each Shrek movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Secrets of Shrek (3:52)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 This featurette spotlights the various fairy tale characters that were shown throughout the original movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Deleted Scenes (8:01)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Here we get three storyboard outlined sequences that weren\u2019t animated but we get to see some story ideas, a few of which were used in the sequels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We also get a set of features under \u201cShrek, Rattle &amp; Roll\u201d: <strong><u>Shrek in the Swamp: Karaoke Dance Party (2:53)<\/u><\/strong>, <strong><u>Music Videos<\/u><\/strong> for <strong>\u201cBest Years of Our Lives\u201d (3:08)<\/strong> by Baha Men, <strong>\u201cI\u2019m a Believer\u201d (3:15)<\/strong> from Smash Mouth and <strong>\u201cWhat\u2019s up Duloc\u201d (3:57)<\/strong> from <em>Shrek the Musical<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Filmmakers\u2019 Commentary<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Directors Andrew Adamson &amp; Vicky Jenson and Producer Aron Warner sit down for a low-key but still fun and informative commentary track. They divulge where certain concepts came from, praising the voice talent and some of the more typical commentary elements.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>DISC 2 (BLU-RAY) <\/strong>contains all of the above plus: <strong><u>The Animators\u2019 Corner<\/u><\/strong>, a picture-in-picture function featuring interviews with various members of the cast (Meyers, Murphy, Diaz, etc) and crew (director Andrew Adamson, etc), some behind-the-scenes recording footage, storyboard artwork and pre-visualization computer graphics.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>DISC 3 (BLU-RAY):<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><u>Shrek\u2019s Short Films (24:59)<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 \u201cShrek in the Swamp Karaoke Party\u201d, \u201cFar Far Away Idol\u201d and \u201cPuss in Boots: The Three Diablos\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Shrek\u2019s Halloween Favorites (51:03)<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 \u201cThe Ghost of Lord Farquaad\u201d, \u201cScared Shrekless\u201d, \u201cThriller Night\u201d and \u201cThe Pig Who Cried Werewolf\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Shrek\u2019s Holiday Favorites (1:05:00)<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 \u201cShrek the Halls\u201d, \u201cDonkey\u2019s Caroling Christmas-tacular\u201d and \u201cShrek\u2019s Yule Log\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The Adventures of Puss in Boots TV Episodes (1:55:20)<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 Here you can watch five episodes from the series that surprisingly lasted six seasons and 78 episodes. For the most part the picture does look fine, albeit I can\u2019t say it\u2019s all that significant of an ugrade, if at all. Detail looks okay though this early 21st century CGI animation doesn\u2019t quite benefit and certainly not the difference from DVD to Blu-ray. However, colors do look pretty good from the green in Shrek\u2019s skin to the browns and grays on Donkey.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>AUDIO \u2013 4\u00bd\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td id=\"review-content2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The disc comes with a DTS-X track so probably a slight update on the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 that is on the Blu-ray disc.
