But, when she backs out on him, he has no one to accompany him but his best friend and source of eternal aggravation, Rob Brydon. As the brilliant comic duo, freestyling with flair, drive each other mad with constant competition and showdowns of competing impressions of famous celebrities, the ultimate odd couple realize in the end a rich amount about not only good food, but the nature of fame, relationships and their own lives.

THE TRIP TO ITALY (2014) — In this witty and incisive follow-up, director Michael Winterbottom reunites Coogan and Brydon for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. The two enjoy mouthwatering meals in gorgeous settings while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman’s vocal register, the artistic merits of “Jagged Little Pill,” and, of course, the virtue of sequels.

THE TRIP TO SPAIN (2017) — Coogan and Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country’s gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age.

THE TRIP TO GREECE (2020) — When Odysseus left Troy it took him ten years to get back to his home in Ithaca. Steve and Rob have only six days on their own personal odyssey. On the way they argue about tragedy and comedy, astronomy and biology, myth, history, democracy and the meaning of life.

Quick Hit Review: I’ve seen all four of The Trip movies and while they are a bit dry at times, I do consider them the film versions of comfort food. The back and forth between Coogan and Brydon is a lot of fun and even when thing slow down, still found myself engaged enough with the thin story. Only wish I could, at a reasonable price anyway, get a hold of the television series these films were cut down from as there’s probably hours of footage not in the films.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2/5

The four-disc set comes housed in a clear DVD case, each film receiving its own disc.
