Sober for only a few days, Don is supposed to be spending the weekend with his brother, Wick (PHILLIP TERRY), but, eager for a drink, Don convinces his girlfriend (JANE WYMAN) to take Wick to a show. Don, meanwhile, heads to his local bar and misses the train out of town. After recounting to the bartender (HOWARD DA SILVA) how he developed a drinking problem, Don goes on a weekend-long bender that just might prove to be his last.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/lostweekend01.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"The Lost Weekend\" src=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/lostweekend01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quick Hit Review: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting to read how <strong><em>The Lost Weekend<\/em><\/strong> stunned audiences back in the day, though I suppose they never saw anything resembling a drama about alcoholism before (can\u2019t imagine how they would react to <em>Leaving Las Vegas<\/em>\u2026), but today this is not only tame, but sometimes comes across over-the-top, even clich\u00e9d. Having said that, it\u2019s still a decent portrayal (at least from my understanding as someone who doesn\u2019t drink) of a broken man, pushing away those who care about him and doing anything to get another drink.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also deserving praise is Jane Wyman as Don Birnam\u2019s faithful girlfriend, someone unwilling to give up on him even when his own flesh and blood does. I think her naitivity about Don\u2019s alcoholism is equally realistic, in fact in the end she talks about him quitting cold which is not just na\u00efve but pretty dangerous from what I\u2019ve read, not sure if this was known back in the 30s and 40s, however. In any case, really liked Wyman in her few scenes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/lostweekend03.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"The Lost Weekend\" src=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/lostweekend03.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>The Lost Weekend<\/em><\/strong> was directed by venerable filmmaker Billy Wilder, the man behind the wonderful thriller <em>Double Indemnity<\/em>, <em>Sunset Boulevard<\/em>, <em>Some Like it Hot<\/em> and the romance-drama, <em>The Apartment<\/em> which I had watched earlier this year. The film looks fabulous in HD, detail is fairly sharp and the original film grain and noise has been retained quite nicely. There were a few minor specs and scratches but nothing I\u2019d consider a major flaw nor very distracting while watching the film (I only noticed with closer inspection afterward).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>AUDIO \u2013 4\u00bc\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td id=\"review-content2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track and is impressive. Course, the vast majority of this is strictly dialogue driven with some musical elements thrown in.
