When Christina (HEATHER SEARS), the young star of a new musical is contacted by the shadowy specter, her producer (EDWARD DE SOUZA) investigates, tracking the ghostly Phantom to his secret underground lair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/phantomoftheopera01.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"The Phantom of the Opera\" src=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/phantomoftheopera01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quick Hit Review: <\/strong>I won\u2019t pretend to have an over familiarity to the classic stage play or the various adaptations other than knowing the notable music, particularly its theme. This version of <strong><em>The Phantom of the Opera<\/em><\/strong>, from what I understand after listening to the commentaries in this very release, has a less romantic angle compared with others. But having not watched them, doesn\u2019t seem like I had the same disappointment as the audiences did back when this was released in 1962, and was a bit of a flop for Universal and Hammer Films.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Personally, found the movie to be relatively entertaining, performances were solid enough if unremarkable, although seeing Michael Gough, whom I\u2019ve only really associated with playing Alfred in the Burton\/Schumacher <em>Batman <\/em>movies, playing a cold hearted bastard, was eye-opening. I did really like Hebert Lom as the titular \u201cPhantom\u201d and his heart-breaking back-story and transformation. In addition, Heather Sears for her part as the singer\/damsel had some nice on-screen charisma for a thinly written character.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/phantomoftheopera14.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"The Phantom of the Opera\" src=\"https:\/\/d.img.vision\/moviemansguide\/phantomoftheopera14.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>The Phantom of the Opera<\/em><\/strong> was helmed by Terence Fisher, a longtime director for Hammer Films, having worked on 1957\u2019s <em>The Curse of Frankenstein<\/em>, 1958\u2019s <em>Dracula<\/em>, 1959\u2019s <em>The Mummy<\/em>, <em>The Curse of the Werewolf<\/em> in 1961, which I recently watched and reviewed for Shout Factory\u2019s Collector\u2019s Edition release, and numerous other horror films throughout the \u201850s and \u201860s.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 4.25\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td id=\"review-content2\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d release comes with a matted <strong>slip cover<\/strong> and the interior cover is reversible revealing the film\u2019s original artwork.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Audio Commentary<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 Film Historians Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson. Nice track between the two who have previously recorded tracks for Shout and, if memory serves, other releases. The pair break down the production and the history behind it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The Men Who Made Hammer: Anthony Hinds (27:44)<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 Newest entry into this series, this one profiling the producer behind many Hammer Films productions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Phantom Triumphant: Edwin Astley and Hammer\u2019s Horror Opera (15:47)<\/u><\/strong> \u2014 Featurette delves into the score behind this iteration of <em>The Phantom of the Opera<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Herbert Lom: The Soul Behind the Mask (15:28)<\/u><\/strong> is a profile on the actor who portrayed the Phantom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The Making of <em>The Phantom of the Opera<\/em> (31:01)<\/u><\/strong> is a 2014 featurette looking back at the Hammer version of the classic story and how it played back then and today. Hosted by Actor Edward De Souza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Behind the Scenes of <em>The Phantom of the Opera<\/em> (3:08)<\/u><\/strong> is an interview with Brian Johnson who worked on the effects and tells stories of the production.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><u>The Phantom of the Opera<\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><u>, 1.66 Version<\/u><\/strong> includes an optional <strong>Audio Commentary<\/strong> with Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><u>The Phantom of the Opera<\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><u>, TV Version (1:37:59)<\/u><\/strong> offers different scenes more \u201csuitable\u201d for television, though today it could be played uncut. Given there\u2019s no mention on the back cover, presumably the transfer was provided by Universal, which does look quite good all these years later. Detail is sharp and well defined and colors are vibrant and set against some of the darker shots, do have some nice pop to them.
