Plot Synopsis: <\/strong>When accidentally destroying his workplace gets salesman Teddy (KEVIN HART) fired, he can\u2019t find another decent job unless he finally gets his GED. But two major things stand in his way: Carrie (TIFFANY HADDISH), a teacher with no time for grown-up class clowns, and Stewart (TARAN KILLAM), Teddy\u2019s high school nemesis-turned-principal who will do anything to see him fail. Now every school rule is about to be broken when they all go head-to-head in a wild battle of wits, pranks, and lessons you can\u2019t learn in books.<\/p>\n

Quick Hit Review: <\/strong>It\u2019s hard to decide which was a worse comedy of 2018: Night School<\/em><\/strong> or Life of the Party<\/em>. Both movies feature talented comedic actors and both delivered very little laughs, if any at all. Kevin Hart, like Melissa McCarthy, seems to play the same type of character and this one is no different. Even Tiffany Hadish, who received plenty of praise for her role in Girls Trip<\/em> (a movie I also didn\u2019t care for), is a victim of the poorly written script, which was co-written by Hart himself, so he is at least partially to blame, albeit he was one of FIVE writers. That is a sign of a quality script if I ever saw one…<\/p>\n

The biggest issue, beyond some surprisingly bad or lazy performances from an otherwise talented cast is the jokes, or \u201cjokes\u201d I mean, go on too long. For instance, early on in the film, there\u2019s a dinner scene in which, stuck with a large bill, Teddy decides to get out of it by planting pubic hair on a piece of desert. F*cking Hilarious. Anyway, it\u2019s a scene that could\u2019ve easily been cut down and this is only one of many that stretched this to a nearly two hour running time when 90-minutes would\u2019ve been sufficient, albeit the only effect would\u2019ve been to put me out of my misery..<\/p>\n

The movie was directed by Malcolm D. Lee whose track record, at least for me, hasn\u2019t been the best. Along with the aforementioned Girls Trip<\/em>, Lee also helmed such comedy greats like Undercover Brother<\/em>, Scary Movie 5<\/em> and Barbershop: The Next Cut<\/em>. High quality comedies. I would say I was disappointed but the trailers didn\u2019t do much for me and even though I do generally like Kevin Hart, this material did not adhere to his talents.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This release comes with a title-embossed slip cover<\/strong> and inside is a redemption code for the Digital HD<\/strong> copy. There is also an Extended Cut<\/u><\/strong> which runs about 5 minutes longer. Needless to say, I didn\u2019t bother watching this version.<\/p>\n

Audio Commentary<\/u><\/strong> with Malcolm D. Lee<\/p>\n

Night School<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u2019s In Session (13:33)<\/u><\/strong> is an introduction to the ensemble cast.<\/p>\n

Who\u2019s the Student? Who\u2019s the Teacher? (2:33)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish give their backstory on how they became \u201cride-or-die\u201d friends more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

Prom Night Revisited (3:07)<\/u><\/strong> featurette has the cast take a trip down memory lane talking about their own high school proms.<\/p>\n

Cap \u2018n Gown \u2018n Giggles (2:08)<\/u><\/strong> is on the cast and crew cracking up during Teddy\u2019s \u201cuplifting\u201d graduation speech.<\/p>\n

Making of the Dance Battle (3:45)<\/u><\/strong> is a sneak peek into the dance rehearsal of the prom night dance battle.<\/p>\n

Christian Chicken (0:40)<\/u><\/strong> is a fake commercial for this chicken joint<\/p>\n

Game Over (1:46)<\/u><\/strong> is a chat with Hart, Yvonne Orji and Megalyn Echikunwoke on the complicated relationship between Maya and Teddy.<\/p>\n

There are 6 Deleted Scenes (13:27)<\/u><\/strong>, an Alternate Opening (6:29)<\/u><\/strong> and, as you can imagine, a Gag Reel (11:04)<\/u><\/strong>. Apparently the 4K version includes another Gag Reel.<\/p>\n

Last up is an Extended Performance of \u201cEl Sueno\u201d (2:40)<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Universal releases Night School<\/em><\/strong> presented with a 2.39 widescreen aspect ratio and given a good 1080p high-definition transfer which is generally bright considering the \u201ccomedic\u201d (and I use that term loosely) tone. Detail appears sharp and well defined throughout and there were no apparent signs of aliasing or artifacts.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
