Tales of terror reveal the consequences of extinguishing a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight and a grumpy hermit&#8217;s\u00a0encounter with a sinister trick-or-treater.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Review: <\/strong>For one reason or another, I had never seen <strong><em>Trick \u2018R Treat<\/em><\/strong> in the 9 since its initial Blu-ray\/DVD release. Well, I guess better late than never because I had a blast watching this uniquely put together anthology horror film that almost seamlessly connects each story and although it might make your head hurt attempting to figure out when each even happens (for instance, one story you see a couple walk buy during a parade\/party, the same couple who open up the movie, one of whom meets a grisly death).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HtCJHUc.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Trick 'R Treat\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HtCJHUc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both the writing and direction from Michael Dougherty were well done, more impressed with the script more so than some solid directing from the filmmaker marking his debut as a director, though he did previously have writing credits for <em>X-Men 2<\/em> and <em>Superman Returns<\/em> (both films helmed by Bryan Singer), and post <strong><em>TRT<\/em><\/strong> has scripted <em>Krampus<\/em>, <em>X-Men: Apocalypse<\/em> and the upcoming <em>Godzilla: King of Monsters<\/em>. What struck me about this script was, and this is a term used most recently to describe <em>Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em>, how it subverted expectations and did it amazingly well, making for one twist that back in the day did surprise audiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The performances from a respectable cast was a lot of fun, most notably Dylan Baker playing an absolutely creepy serial killer (not too surprising given his turn as a murderer on <em>Law &amp; Order: Criminal Intent<\/em>), Brian Cox as an awnry old man facing off against the pumpkin man named Sam was great; and Anna Paquin veers again into fantasy land akin to her role on <em>True Blood<\/em>. Also special accomidations for Leslie Bibb as she did well for a relatively small, yet important, part.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/euV9ekr.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Trick 'R Treat\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/euV9ekr.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the end, as someone who hasn\u2019t been a big fan of anthologies finding most of them on the whole being worthwhile, and I include <em>Crrepshow<\/em>n in that, <strong><em>Trick \u2018R Treat<\/em><\/strong> really did the job amazingly well and can see why the movie has garnered a healthy following in the years since its release.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 4.0\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td id=\"review-content2\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d release comes with a matted <strong>slip cover<\/strong> while the interior cover is reversible revealing the movie\u2019s original poster artwork.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Audio Commentary<\/u><\/strong> with writer\/director Michael Dougherty. This is an old track but still rather interesting as Dougherty tends to be a great storyteller and keeps the flow going through the film\u2019s 80-minute length.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interviews &amp; Featurettes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Tales of Folklore &amp; Fright: Creating <em>Trick \u2018R Treat<\/em> (16:05)<\/u><\/strong> features new interviews with Writer\/Director Michael Dougherty, Conceptual Artist Breelin Burns and Storyboard Artist Simeon Wilkins.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Tales of Mischief and Mayhem (19:46)<\/u><\/strong> includes Dougherty providing some more background on the project and the approach to the style.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Sounds of Shock &amp; Superstition (11:10)<\/u><\/strong> finds Dougherty and Composer Douglas Pipes discussing the score and it set the right tone.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Tales of Dread and Despair (7:23)<\/u><\/strong> is on making a unique of filming an anthology horror comedy and how it did upon release and how buzz was built.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em><u>Trick \u2018R Treat<\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><u>: The Lor and Legends of Halloween (27:26)<\/u><\/strong> is an older featurette with on-set interviews with members of the cast and crew. Narrated by Brian Cox.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Trick \u2018R Treat: Season\u2019s Greetings (3:54)<\/u><\/strong> is the animated short directed by Dougherty which was the inspiration for the film. Includes optional commentary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>School Bus FX Comparison (1:13)<\/u><\/strong> shows the sequence done side-by-side with the final comp and vfx breakdown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Additional Scenes (17:13)<\/u><\/strong> include several scenes cut out from the final film. Whichever the case, this is a nice looking picture with a good blend of some bright colors set against the darker backgrounds since, from what I can tell, all of the film takes place at night save for a flashback sequence. This was a pretty strong soundtrack here with the unsurprisingly crisp and clear dialogue levels but where it really comes to life is with the blood-curdling screams as Halloween festivities turn violent.
