It\u2019s also shaping up to be the best two <em>Potter<\/em> movies of the series, a series in which has been consistent in being good on the cusp of greatness (for me, it got close with the darker <em>Prisoner of Azkaban<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Plot (from back cover): <\/strong>Harry (DANIEL RADCLIFFE), Ron (RUPERT GRINT) and Hermione (EMMA WATSON) set out to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort\u2019s (RALPH FIENNES) power \u2013 the Horcruxes. On their own and on the run, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever&#8230; but Dark Forces threaten to tear them apart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/pZ2pDxH.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/pZ2pDxH.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019ve never been the biggest <em>Harry Potter<\/em> fan and in fact have only read a couple passages from one of the books (don\u2019t even remember which one) but I have enjoyed the series as a whole from an outsider\u2019s perspective. I know some fans have qualms with what or was not included in these movies but from a storytelling point of view, they\u2019ve all done a good job from the casting to forwarding an interesting story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With <strong><em>Deathly Hallows Part 1<\/em><\/strong>, it takes the series to a whole new level. For one thing, we don\u2019t even enter into Hogwart\u2019s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is under the guide Professor Severus Snape (ALAN RICKMAN) whom, like our other favorite <em>Potter<\/em> characters (Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Brendan Gleeson as \u2018Mad-Eye\u2019 Mooney \u2013 whose demise was understated IMO \u2013 and the others in the Order of the Phoenix), we only see early on as a good portion of the second and third acts are centered on Harry, Ron and Hermione.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/igUqurG.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/igUqurG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And even though much of the film has the kids on the run jumping from one part of the land to the next showing their wizard and witch kick assness with the spells they\u2019ve learned to defend themselves, it\u2019s one hell of a ride combining thrilling scenes with some truly crushing dramatic moments (the scene where Harry and Hermione dance to Nick Cave\u2019s song, \u2018O Children\u2019 stands out).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s the drama and acting by our main characters, more so than the story, where <strong><em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1<\/em><\/strong> excels, however. Director David Yates and writer Steve Kloves split the final book in two not to get more money out of the fans (though I\u2019m sure Warner isn\u2019t complaining) but to tell the full story within a reasonable timeframe rather than cramming it all into a three hour and under feature film. This first part starts the journey and I\u2019m sure the opening and second act continues the quest in <strong><em>Part 2<\/em><\/strong> but from what I\u2019ve been reading, the majority of the film is outright action so Yates and company have set the appropriate tone before cranking things up for the ultimate duel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Cc8qHtk.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Cc8qHtk.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As far as the acting goes, Radcliffe, Grint and Watson all have been fairly consistent through the series \u2013 save for maybe <em>Sorcerer\u2019s Stone<\/em> \u2013 and here now a decade later, they\u2019ve obviously embodied their characters but rather than sleepwalking through their roles, they\u2019re still adding layers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Overall, <strong><em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1<\/em><\/strong> is a great film and probably my second favorite behind <em>Prisoner of Azkaban<\/em> (and <em>Order of the Phoenix<\/em> is right up there as well) but I certainly hope the second part lives up to the build up because otherwise it will taint an otherwise great movie (see: <em>The Matrix Reloaded<\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 3.25\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This release comes with a semi-glossy <strong>slip cover<\/strong>. Inside is a redemption code for the <strong><u>Digital HD<\/u><\/strong> copy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BLU-RAY 1:<br \/>\n<u>Maximum Movie Mode (approx 2:46:00; HD)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Warner\u2019s MMM is a picture-in-picture feature where different members of the crew and cast (minor cast members) show up and talk about different topics that\u2019s going on or in one instance, read passages from the book. I usually enjoy these Maximum Movie Mode\u2019s but this is one of the weaker outings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Focus Points (TRT 19:21; HD)<\/u><\/strong> are a collection of featurettes that delve some into the movie making but not a whole lot as I\u2019m sure anything deeper are or will be contained in the documentaries available in the \u201cUltimate Collector\u2019s Edition\u201d releases.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The Last Days of Privet Road (2:36)<\/li>\n<li>Hagrid\u2019s Motorbike (4:01)<\/li>\n<li>Magical Tents (2:18)<\/li>\n<li>Death Eaters Attack Caf\u00e9 (2:51)<\/li>\n<li>Creating Dobby and Kreacher (3:48)<\/li>\n<li>The Return of Griphook (3:45)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BLU-RAY 2:<br \/>\n<u>The Seven Harry\u2019s (5:29; HD)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Daniel Radcliffe and the rest of the team show what it took to make all the personalities of the seven Harrys \u201cjust right\u201d. Although it\u2019s short, it is interesting to see how it all got put together and the difficulties of the scenes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>On the Green with Rupert, Tom, Oliver and James (13:38; HD)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 A few cast members (Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, and James and Oliver Phelps) hit the links at the famed Celtic Manor and discuss their 10 years of screen comradeship and what lies ahead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Dan, Rupert and Emma\u2019s Running Competition (2:45; HD)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Here you can witness the competitive spirit while filming the escape scene from the snatchers in Swinley Forest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Godric\u2019s Hollow\/The Harry and Nagini Battle (6:00; HD)<\/u><\/strong> is a behind-the-scenes look at these sequences from production design to set design and then filming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The Frozen Lake (4:10; HD)<\/u><\/strong> takes a closer look at the scene in which Harry finds the Sword of Gryffindor and how preparation went to filming the scene inside a water tank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Additional Scenes (10:54; HD)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 There are eight deleted, and extended, scenes included and while they\u2019re all pretty good and well acted, they weren\u2019t necessary in the final film which needed the focus it did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u2019s also <strong><em><u>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1<\/u><\/em><u>: Behind the Soundtrack (3:51; HD)<\/u><\/strong> and <strong><u>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Promotional Trailer (6:25; HD)<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/hJ3SWa7.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/hJ3SWa7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>VIDEO \u2013 5.0\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: justify;\">Warner Home Video releases <strong><em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1<\/em><\/strong> onto 4K presented with a 2160p ultra high-definition transfer and, as the franchise became more adult in tone, is quite dark and in this format, blacks are stark while never losing detail and when there is color, it appears vibrant. Compared with its Blu-ray counterparts, I did notice a fine improvement albeit nothing profound.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>AUDIO \u2013 5.0\/5<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: justify;\">The audio also receives the upgrade treatment. Whereas the Blu-ray came with an already great DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, this one kicks it up a notch to DTS:X which is more robust by comparison.
