Bill & Ted\u2019s Excellent Adventure<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 4.0\/5
\n<\/strong>This first entry finds our non-heinous heroes (ALEX WINTER and KEANU REEVES) in danger of flunking History \u2013 a most odious proposition! But when the righteous Rufus (GEORGE CARLIN) arrives in a time-traveling phone booth, the dense dudes discover their destiny\u2026 and call on the past’s biggest names for help!<\/p>\n

A classic in its own right, the movie is smartly written and features two wonderfully fun, and in many ways, charming performances from Winter and Reeves (the latter perhaps his best performance in his career). Seeing this again, the last time maybe 10-15 years ago, I couldn\u2019t help to smile from beginning to end and laugh at some of the dumber jokes. It also serves as a surprisingly well done history lesson.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Bill & Ted\u2019s Bogus Journey<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 2.5\/5
\n<\/strong>In this sequel, the titular time travelers aren’t making history \u2014 they are history! When an evil-doer from the future sends eviller robot twins of Bill & Ted to assassinate and replace good, non-robot Bill & Ted, the guys wind up face to face with the Grim Reaper (WILLIAM SADLER)! Can the now-dead duo escape, defeat their evil doppelgangers, and win their Battle of the Bands contest?<\/p>\n

I understand Bogus Journey<\/em><\/strong> has its fervent fans and I get that. I also appreciate that this isn\u2019t a paint-by-numbers or cut-and-paste sequel and yet for myself, it\u2019s a bit too out there for my enjoyment. That said, I did like some of the references and seeing Winter and Reeves reprise their roles was still a lot of fun, even if I didn\u2019t laugh (or smile) quite as much. Although William Sadler was a treat as the Grim Reaper, I did miss having George Carlin who basically makes a cameo, appearing for maybe 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\nAudio Commentaries<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Both films come with dual tracks, one with Actor Alex Winter & Producer Scott Kroopf, moderated by Sean Clark (of Horror\u2019s Hallowed Grounds) and the other with Writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.<\/p>\n

And both films have their respective Theatrical Trailers<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Disc 3:
\nTime Flies When You Are Having Fun: A Look Back at a Most Excellent Adventure<\/em> (1:01:14; HD)<\/u><\/strong> is a lengthy retrospective featurette with new interviews by members of the cast and crew including Stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, Co-Screenwriter Chris Matheson, Producer Scott Krropf, amongst many others (including several of the supporting actors) and they discuss the origins and eventual green lighting and casting of the project.<\/p>\n

Bill and Ted Go to Hell: Revisiting a Bogus Journey<\/em> (52:04; HD)<\/u><\/strong> looks back on the sequel with many of the same participants (Reeves, Winter, etc) and others (like William Sadler) who were involved in the project and how it came together.<\/p>\n

The Most Triumphant Making Of Documentary (30:53; SD)<\/u><\/strong> is an older featurette from 2005 and includes archival interviews.<\/p>\n

The Original Bill & Ted: In Conversation with Chris and Ed (20:15; SD)<\/u><\/strong> is an old interview with writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson.<\/p>\n

Score!: An Interview with Guitarist Steve Vai (12:46; SD)<\/u><\/strong> has the musician talking about his career.<\/p>\n

The Hysterical Personages of Bill & Ted (15:27; SD)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 This is a mock documentary on the evolution of our two favorite time travelers (not named Marty and Doc Brown, of course).<\/p>\n

Air Guitar Tutorial (13:15; SD)<\/u><\/strong> teaches us the finer touches of playing the air guitar.<\/p>\n

Vintage EPK (6:39; SD)<\/u><\/strong> is for the sequel and provides some very old interviews and some behind-the-scenes footage.<\/p>\n

The Linguistic Stylings of Bill & Ted (3:41; SD)<\/u><\/strong> looks at the film\u2019s unique dialogue and what they mean (excellent = good, bogus = bad, etc.)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Bill & Ted\u2019s Excellent Adventure<\/em><\/strong> is shown in its original 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and a new 1080p high-definition transfer. It\u2019s actually not a half bad job by Shout Factory which offers good detail throughout and colors appear to be well balanced. It also seems to be clean, free of dust, dirt marks, specs and other flaws. \u2014 4.0\/5<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Bill & Ted\u2019s Bogus Journey<\/em><\/strong> isn\u2019t as good looking yet still the 1080p HD transfer, and presented in its original 1.85 aspect ratio, at least has some nice detail and colors look fairly vibrant. It\u2019s nothing amazing nor does it really pop off the screen or anything, yet still looks fine and no doubt is a nice upgrade over its DVD counterpart.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Both movies come with solid DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 tracks. There\u2019s actually quite a bit to digest as there\u2019s several action set pieces in both films from the time traveling wormhole in Excellent<\/em> and when the two dudes enter the seventh circle of hell in Bogus<\/em>. In both, there\u2019s some nice depth while also offering clear dialogue levels.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

While I wasn\u2019t a fan of Bogus Journey<\/em>, it at least attempts to buck the trend of copying the first film.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
