Director Norman Jewison and writer William Harrison further give us an athletic champion, Jonathan E (JAMES CAAN), whose individual expertise defeats the worldwide corporate leadership\u2019s design: to emphasize the futility of individual effort. Corporate bigwigs (JOHN HOUSEMAN) need Jonathan to retire, but Jonathan begins to have his own dangerous ideas.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"features\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 2.25\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Audio Commentaries<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 There are two tracks included: 1) Director Norman Jewison and 2) Writer William Harrison. Each of these provides their own perspective of how the movie was made with the director giving a bit more detail. Neither one I would describe as scintillating and probably could\u2019ve been spliced together&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>From Rome to <em>Rollerball<\/em>: The Full Circle (7:54; SD)<\/strong><\/span> is an older featurette, made back in the 1970s, with an archive interview with director Norman Jewison talking about the sport of \u201cRollerball\u201d and the warning the movie has and its origins back to Rome.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Return to the Arena: The Making of <em>Rollerball<\/em> (25:04; SD)<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 This one is a bit newer, probably included in the original Laserdisc release in the 90s, and has interviews with various crew members chatting on story and how it resonates.<\/p>\n<p>Also included are some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>TV Spots (1:32; SD)<\/strong><\/span>, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Original Theatrical Trailer (2:58; SD)<\/strong><\/span> and a 6-page booklet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/CLgncYG.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 3px solid blue;\" title=\"Rollerball\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/CLgncYG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>VIDEO \u2013 4.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Rollerball<\/em><\/strong> steamrolls onto Blu-ray presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer and although it\u2019s not quite perfect, the work done still looks good. Detail levels are decent and in spite of some minor instances of dust marks and scratches, for a nearly 30 year old movie, it\u2019s still fairly impressive; colors are bright and darker scenes don\u2019t how any major instances of artifacting, pixilation or compression.<br \/>\n<a name=\"audio\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>AUDIO \u2013 4.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The movie includes a relatively robust 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track, as well as a 2.0 Mono one, showcasing some clear dialogue levels and the action scenes show some depth though most of it still seems centrally located, including the front speakers, with the rear channels being reserved for the score or off-screen elements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><br \/>\n<a name=\"overall\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/gjoGO1M.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 3px solid blue;\" title=\"Rollerball\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/gjoGO1M.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>OVERALL \u2013 3.5\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Overall, <strong><em>Rollerball<\/em><\/strong> is an interesting vision of the future which, if the NFL is an example, seems to have come to fruition. The acting from James Caan is terrific and Norman Jewison\u2019s direction is swift and although hardly the perfect movie, it\u2019s still well worth checking out.
