But in order to get into the mind of this maniac, Graham must face another: Hannibal Lecktor (BRIAN COX), the imprisoned psychiatrist whose own insanity almost cost Graham his life&#8230; and whose insights into \u201cThe Tooth Fairy\u201d could prove as dangerous as the killer himself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/YMwBWLL.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Manhunter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/YMwBWLL.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quick Hit Review: <\/strong>Michael Mann\u2019s <strong><em>Manhunter<\/em><\/strong>, the movie based on Thomas Harris\u2019 novel, \u201cRed Dragon,\u201d is our official first glimpse at Hannibal Lecktor though in popular media, and general audiences, would later recognize Anthony Hopkins portrayal in <em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em>, is one hell of a psychological thriller that features top notch acting from then newcomer William Petersen, Brian Cox as Lecktor and Tom Noonan playing Francis Dollarhyde and while Noonan can\u2019t hold a candle to Ted Levine in <em>Lambs<\/em>, he makes for one creepy fella yet shows some depth than just being some generic serial killer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I know some prefer <strong><em>Manhunter<\/em><\/strong> over its successor <em>Silence of the Lambs<\/em> but I probably place the latter slightly above it. That being said, it\u2019s a well made thriller that doesn\u2019t rely on explosions or even spoon-feeding its viewers and instead focuses on character, primarily that of Graham as he falls deeper into a world he once left behind (by necessity more so than choice). Petersen shows off perhaps some of his best acting in his career, though <em>To Live and Die in L.A.<\/em> isn\u2019t far behind until the early years of \u201cCSI\u201d when it wasn\u2019t complacent\u00a0 it formula.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/PBnweL6.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-screencapture aligncenter\" title=\"Manhunter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/PBnweL6.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For Michael Mann, he already showed skill with <em>Thief<\/em> and seemed to hone in for <strong><em>Manhunter<\/em><\/strong> and for any other filmmaker, he could\u2019ve easily just done the same thing over and over again and instead he tries different things and in 1995 it culminated with his best movie to date, <em>Heat<\/em> while <em>The Insider<\/em> was probably my second favorite movie with <strong><em>Manhunter<\/em><\/strong> coming in third. Still, <strong><em>Manhunter<\/em><\/strong> is his most visually compelling film and in conjunction with a great 1980s soundtrack, it\u2019s probably one of his more memorable movies on his resume.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"features\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"*\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviemansguide.com\/images\/main\/bar_blue.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<table id=\"review-content\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SPECIAL FEATURES \u2013 4.0\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d release comes with a matted <strong>slip cover<\/strong>. The inner cover is reversible displaying the original poster artwork.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Disc 1:<br \/>\n<\/strong>There are four new interviews under <strong>The Making of <em>Manhunter<\/em><\/strong>: <strong><u>The Mind of Madness (18:16; HD)<\/u><\/strong> is an interview with star William Petersen; <strong><u>Courting a Killer (15:54; HD)<\/u><\/strong> features actor Joan Allen; <strong><u>Francis is Gone Forever (22:03; HD)<\/u><\/strong> offers Tom Noonan\u2019s thoughts on his character; and <strong><u>The Eye of the Storm (35:56; HD)<\/u><\/strong> finds Director of Photography Dante Spinotti discussing the movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The Music of <em>Manhunter<\/em> (42:22; HD)<\/u><\/strong> is a collection of interviews with composer Michel Rubini, Barry Andrews (Shiekback), Gary Putnam (The Prime Movers), Rick Shaffer (The Reds), and Gene Stashuk (Red 7). This is probably one of the more fascinating features as we get an in-depth look at some of the iconic score and soundtrack on the movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The First Lecktor (40:29; HD)<\/u><\/strong> has actor Brian Cox answering a variety of questions about his career, how he got the role and about the iconic character.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rounding out the disc is the <strong><u>Theatrical Trailer (2:05; HD)<\/u><\/strong> and a <strong><u>Still Gallery<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Disc 2:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Now, this is an interesting inclusion. The disc has the Director\u2019s Cut in High-Definition with some standard definition inserts. Presumably this is the best we\u2019ll ever see this version of the film in&#8230; However, my personal preference always resides with the Theatrical Cut though there are some interesting differences between the two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Director\u2019s Cut (2:04:12; SD)<\/u><\/strong> is a standard definition version of the DC. Not quite sure what the difference is, though it is 9 seconds <em>shorter<\/em> than the HD director\u2019s cut&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>The <em>Manhunter<\/em> Look (10:04; SD)<\/u><\/strong> is a conversation with Spinotti, I\u2019m guessing filmed for the last MGM DVD release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Inside <em>Manhunter<\/em> (17:17; SD)<\/u><\/strong> is a collection of archive interviews with Petersen, Allen, Cox and Noonan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>Audio Commentary<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Writer\/Director Michael Mann gives his thoughts on the DC, some of the changes from the TC and other observations. The 1080p high-def transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec) has all the vibrant colors one would expect from a 1980s Michael Mann production (like \u201cMiami Vice\u201d). The nice thing is, even with the bright colors detail is never lost.
