Plot Synopsis: <\/strong>The mysterious L\u00e9on (JEAN RENO) is New York\u2019s top hitman. When his next-door neighbors are murdered, L\u00e9on becomes the unwilling guardian of the family\u2019s sole survivor \u2013 12-year-old Mathilda (NATHALIE PORTMAN). But Mathilda doesn\u2019t just want protection; she wants revenge. The two are up against a rogue DEA agent (GARY OLDMAN) intent on killing Mathilda out of his own, disturbed, style of vengeance.<\/p>\n

Quick Hit Review: L<\/em>\u00e9<\/em>on: The Professional<\/em><\/strong> is easily my favorite Luc Besson film, a mixture of a superbly written screenplay, well-rounded characters who are naturally fleshed out and aren\u2019t caracatures and three excellent performances from Reno, Portman and Oldman with the latter chewing up scenary like no other and I loved every bit of it; heck, back then I\u2019d support a spin-off starring that character… Beyond that, it\u2019s just a touching, heartfelt flick that delves beyond its action-centric genre.<\/p>\n

10 Year Retrospective: Cast and Crew Look Back (25:10)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Filmed in 2004, members of the cast (Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, et al) and crew (Producer Patrice Ledoux, DP Thierry Arbogast, et al) talk in individual interviews about the project and its characters.<\/p>\n

Jean Reno: The Road to <\/u><\/strong>L<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00e9<\/u><\/em><\/strong>on<\/u><\/em><\/strong> (12:25)<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 This featurette examines the complexities of the main character and his relationship with Mathilda. It also gives a background on Reno.<\/p>\n

Sony releases The Professional<\/em><\/strong> remastered in \u201c4K\u201d (well, 1080p) making this transfer the best yet available showcasing excellent detail throughout and colors appear to be natural and not blown out. There were no instances of aliasing, artifacts, dust marks or scratches. I was pleasantly surprised with it and it makes 2\/2 with these recent Besson releases (the other being The Fifth Element<\/em>).

AUDIO \u2013 4.75\/5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The movie receives a Dolby Atmos track (decodes to TrueHD 7.1 for older receivers unable to output Atmos) providing for excellent dialogue levels but the most impressive is with the various action scenes from the various gunfire to the explosion in the climax. They reverberate through each channel with fluidity without being overpowering while the LFE channel kicks in to add that extra boost.<\/p>\n

Overall, L<\/em><\/strong>\u00e9<\/em><\/strong>on: The Professional<\/em><\/strong> is a masterpiece of work from Luc Besson and is easily my favorite and most emotion-filled film to date. The performances by Jean Reno (who deserved an Oscar nomination), Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman were all fantastic in their own distinctive ways and it\u2019s just an all around well made flick with good mixture of drama and suspense. The Blu-ray released by Sony is their latest and best offering with amazing video and audio transfers.<\/p>\n
