ABOUT MOVIEMAN’S GUIDE TO THE MOVIES

Basic History
Movieman’s Guide to the Movies has been online, in some form and fashion, since around 2000 that began on the website building site, Homestead with a small community of like-minded movie lovers. It began as a hobby site and over the years has grown from theatrical to home video reviews on DVD and Blu-ray. As the site creator, my interest vary across genres though I have preferences over others.

Ratings
My ratings system is rather simple:

  • 4.5-5 Stars – Excellent
  • 4.0-4.25 Stars –  Very Good
  • 3.5-3.75 Stars – Good
  • 3.0-3.25 Stars – Fair
  • 2.5-2.75 Stars – Average
  • 2.0-2.25 Stars – Below Average
  • 1.5-1.75 Stars – Poor
  • 0-1.25 Stars – Downright Awful

I decided on this range of ratings as a way to distinguish certain movies especially on the upper end where perfection, especially with films, is hard to come by for me. How I rate the video and audio portions vary though I do tend to give some leniency to older films compared with newer releases which more often than not, especially from studio releases, are near perfect in both categories.

  1. Hello.

I’m writing review of 4K VOD in Poland, and want to compare some movies with different quality (SD, HD and 4K).

May I use few (about 3 or 4) of your pictures from your BD Screen Caps? Of course with links to your site.

    Best regards from Poland,
    Szymon Adamus.

  5. Great site! Really like the reviews. For some reason the screen grabs on page 2 from every one of your reviews before October 2016 aren’t showing up. Did they get deleted? Hope you can get em back on line, awesome you had them available.

  6. Yes, Imgur, where the caps are hosted, changed their codes. You can click the Imgur logo and go to their site to view the screen caps.

I’ve since have had to code the image links myself.

  7. Hey Movieman (Brian?)–

I have a film called “The Drama Club” being released on VOD on June 9th. The Wrap just released a little piece written by the director, Joe McClean, and we’re trying to build some momentum from that for our upcoming release.

Would you have any interest in writing a review of the film? Trailer is below. Let me know if you’d like a link to the screener.

  11. So tried my best but with it being a scene with a lot of motion, only could get these where the camera (and actors) were stable:
