Viking Ragnar Lothbrok (TRAVIS FIMMEL) is a young farmer and family man who is frustrated by the policies of Earl Haraldson (GABRIEL BYRNE), his local chieftain who sends his Viking raiders east to the Baltic states and Russia, whose residents are as poor as the Norsemen. Ragnar wants to head west, across the ocean, to discover new civilizations. With assistance from his friend Floki (GUSTAF SKARSGARD), Ragnar builds a faster, sleeker fleet of boats to help him make it to the Western world. Through the years Ragnar, who claims to be a direct descendant of the god Odin, continues to struggle with Earl until the two face each other in a final battle for supremacy. Following that, Ragnar goes on a search for new lands to conquer.

This massive 27-disc set is housed in two separate, DVD-sized extra-wide, clear cases with seasons 1-3 in one and 4-6 in the other. These are the same exact discs previously released in the individual season sets. Personally while the packaging is fine, I kind of wish these were Blu-ray cases as this won’t sit nicely next to other complete series sets I own…

As these are the same discs, all of the bonus features are here. I’ve broken down what’s included by season.

VIDEO – 4½/5, AUDIO – 4½/5

Every season of Vikings is presented with a 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio as originally televised (and streamed on Amazon Prime) and a 1080p high-definition transfer. Detail is sharp though colors are dampened with the often dreary weather not to mention the dark tone of the storylines and characters.

Every episode comes with a commanding DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track outputting clear dialogue and some good depth with the more action-centric (i.e. battles) scenes. Ambient noises are also apparent such as the general chatter within the villages or day-to-day work like blacksmithing and other olden day chores.
