Room 9 was a shocking movie. Shocking in that it was so bad on every level from the acting, dialogue, direction, sound design, etc. And unfortunately there appears to be a sequel in development…

Plot Synopsis: Long ago, room 9 of the Johnson/Bedford Inn, located in a remote small town, was the site of a gruesome double murder. Decades later, with the town terrorized once again by a string of bloody ritual killings, the mysterious Star (SCOUT TAYLOR-COMPTON) arrives to investigate and suffers bizarre flashbacks related to the Inn’s slayings. Is she connected to the killings… or the Inn’s next victim? Quick Hit Review: Room 9 has to be not one of the worst movies I’ve seen, but quite possible the worst movie I’ve ever seen. I had gone into this, based on the cover artwork, of being some sort of old school killer stalking victims at some rundown hotel. Spoiler alert: it’s not. In fact, neither the front cover nor the back is ever seen in the film. However, that’s really a minor point and this isn’t the first direct-to-video release to have misleading artwork. No, in fact the artwork, as bland as it is, is easily the best aspect. The movie itself has zero redeeming values. Everything from the obnoxious direction and editing, washed-out and flat cinematography, bad acting from all involved (including the more seasoned actors like Kane Hodder and Scout Taylor-Compton), poor “plot” which only became laughable at the end and worse of all, absolutely dreadful sound design, a few scenes where dialogue is drowned out by background noises; apparently no boom mikes were used? I get there are limitations to these micro-budget films (at least I hope so) but what I watched was just ridiculous. Even if you set aside a confusing plot (where certain characters have visions from the past, so guess there’s a supernatural element), the technical side was shockingly bad. Room 9 is a movie I really regret watching. Amongst the movies in the bottom 10 of my personal list, I can at least point to something positive. Hell, even the end credits scroll at a snail’s pace. Not here. For the love of god, skip this. |

Room 9 comes to DVD presented with a 1.78 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio and as I mentioned in my review, the picture is pretty bland, no real color anywhere and it does have the usual, for standard definition, bouts of heavy noise. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is weak and just ugly to listen to with a lot of white noise or on location sounds pouring through, albeit in and out. |
