THE MOVIES |
Nighthawk (1979) Youngman Duran (NICK MANCUSO), a Maskai Indian tribal deputy, is torn between the modern world and the ancient mysticism of his people. During his patrol he is summoned to investigate the bizarre death of a horse. The animal exhibits razor-sharp wounds that no coyote or mountain lion could inflict. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, on a camping trip in the desert is attacked by thousands of swarming bats. Duran learns of the attack and sets out to save her, not knowing the terror that looms ahead. Shadow of the Hawk (1976) |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5 |
Both movies are contained on a single disc. No features were included. |
VIDEO – 4.5/5 |
Both Nightwing and Shadow of the Hawk are presented in 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given 1080p high-definition transfers. Presumably Mill Creek got the source from Sony directly and no restoration work was done, but even so, I was very impressed with how both films looked. The detail is fairly sharp throughout and colors, for the most part, are vibrant. There are a few minor specs here and there, however nothing that I found all that distracting. |
AUDIO – 4.0/5 |
The movies each receive a basic but serviceable LPCM Stereo tracks. Neither of these movies are exactly action heavy with only a few scenes showing off a bit of depth. Otherwise, dialogue does sound clear with only some minor background noise. |
OVERALL – 3.0/5 |
Overall, Nightwing and Shadow of the Hawk might not be great movies, but each has their own bit of charm, I suppose. The performances from the cast made the most out of the material, especially on Nightwing and I’d say they’re worth a look, especially with Mill Creek’s bargain price and respectable video and audio transfers. |
