Suddenly, Last Summer is a great drama both in terms of story but especially the performances by Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor were amazing and deserving of the Oscar nominations they received that year.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Young socialite Catherine Holly (ELIZABETH TAYLOR) is traumatized and committed after witnessing her cousin’s violent death on a trip to Europe. Her aunt, Violet Venable (KATHARINE HEPBURN), wants to hide the events of her son’s death and attempts to bribe young surgeon Dr. John Cukrowicz (MONTGOMERY CLIFT) to perform a lobotomy on Catherine. But John vows to find out the truth about Catherine’s state before taking any action.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0.5/5

This comes with a 6-page essay booklet. The only feature is the film’s Original Theatrical Trailer (2:51; HD).

VIDEO – 4.75/5, AUDIO – 4.0/5

Presented in stark black and white, Suddenly, Last Summer arrives on Blu-ray through Twilight Time shown in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a nice looking 1080p high-definition transfer. This really is a fine looking picture here with some natural film grain while also showcasing sharp detail throughout. I didn’t notice any major instances of dust marks, scratches or other flaws.

The movie has been given your basic but effective DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 track which does sound quite good with clear and clean dialogue levels while still having some slight depth with the music (an isolated score track is also available)

OVERALL – 4.0/5

Overall, Suddenly, Last Summer is a great drama both in terms of story but especially the performances by Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor were amazing and deserving of the Oscar nominations they received that year. This Blu-ray release from Twilight Time offers great video/audio transfers but once again, falters in the features department.
