Kid Galahad is a fun Elvis Presley sports musical (not many of those out there) that features some catchy 1960s tunes and some fine performances from Presley and Gig Young.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Fresh out of the military and flat broke, Walter Gulick (ELVIS PRESLEY) takes the only job he can find — as a sparring partner at the local gym. Willy (GIG YOUNG), the owner of the gym, sees potential in Walter as a professional fighter, and takes him under his wing. Willy hopes that Walter will earn enough money fighting in the ring to help him pay off his many gambling debts. Walter, on the other hand, hopes that he can earn the attention of Willy’s little sister Rose (JOAN BLACKMAN).

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0.5/5

This comes with a 6-page essay booklet. The only feature is the film’s Original Theatrical Trailer (2:49; SD).

VIDEO – 3.5/5, AUDIO – 4.0/5

Kid Galahad enters the ring on Blu-ray presented with a 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. The detail on this, close-ups especially, is sharp and nicely defined but I did notice several instances of dust marks and a few, albeit singular framed, film damage. So this isn’t an entirely clean picture but at least for the most part colors are bright so there is a modest pop.

The disc includes your standard but effective DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 track. While relegated to only a single channel, this sounded pretty good with fine depth when it came to the musical scenes and dialogue levels came through with nice clarity with no pops, hisses or other audio ailments.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, Kid Galahad is a fun Elvis Presley sports musical (not many of those out there) that features some catchy 1960s tunes and some fine performances from Presley and Gig Young. This Blu-ray release has good video and audio transfers but falters in the features department.
