While The Sea Chase is an interesting viewpoint for WWII following the German side, it was utterly distracting seeing someone like John Wayne trying to pass himself off as a German captain, not even bothering with a fake German accent.

Karl Ehrlich (JOHN WAYNE) is the German captain of a freighter stationed in an Australian port. Ehrlich, a fervent opponent of Nazism, receives word that World War II has commenced in Europe, and that he must immediately make his way to Germany while avoiding the pursuing Allied ships. Aboard his ship is a German spy (LANA TURNER), whose safe passage he must ensure. Meanwhile, a British ship – with Cmdr. Jeff Napier (DAVID FARRAR) at its helm – is hot on their trail. |

The Sea Chase comes to Blu-ray through Warner’s Archive Collection and is presented with a 2.55 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition. The picture shown has some strong colors, decent detail and is fairly clean with no obvious signs of artifacts or aliasing. On the downside, though, I did see some haloing in some shots so I wonder if some edge enhancement was used. The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo track sounds pretty good providing clear dialogue levels and in the few ‘action’-like sequences, there’s some moderate depth. It’s nothing I’d describe as fantastic but with it being 60+ years old, they did a decent job with the lossless audio track. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
Overall, while The Sea Chase is an interesting viewpoint for WWII following the German side, it was utterly distracting seeing someone like John Wayne trying to pass himself off as a German captain, not even bothering with a fake German accent. Even as a Wayne fan, this hardly is a highlight for his career. This Blu-ray release from Warner’s Archive Collection only has a trailer and okay video and audio transfers. |
