While Vega$ wasn’t quality, or even consistent, entertainment, I did find this to be an enjoyable enough series that rode almost solely on Robert Urich’s charms, with honorable mentions toward Bart Braveman and Greg Morris, rather than the writing.

Series Synopsis: Welcome to the underbelly of Nevada’s shimmering desert oasis. Between call girl murders, land disputes, business fallouts, and celebrity protections, private eye Dan Tanna (ROBERT URICH) has his work cut out for him. Helping him along the way is a close circle of allies including Beatrice (PHYLLIS DAVIS), Angie (JUDY LANDERS), “Binzer” (BART BRAVEMAN), and Lt. David Nelson (GREG MORRIS). Also guest starring Tony Curtis as Philip “Slick” Roth, a landlord and casino owner who always has a case that needs solving.
Quick Hit Review: Vega$ only lasted three seasons and the first, while had its moments and entirely relied on its charismatic star in Robert Ulrich, had shoddy writing and unfulfilling mystery plots. But changes were made by the end of season one and into the second added Greg Morris as a series regular and I noticed the storylines were a bit tighter and certain grating characters *cough* Angie *cough* were gratefully removed. The third season didn’t quite improve but still was more than watchable, but poor ratings and Urich, according to Wikipedia, had grown tired of the role and lack of quality writing. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5 |
This 18-disc set comes in an extra-extra wide clear DVD case and includes a title-embossed slip cover. Only feature are Episode Promos. |
VIDEO – 3.0/5, AUDIO – 3.0/5
|
Neither the video or audio are particularly impressive, but both look decent enough for a series closing in on 40-years-old. The 1.33 full frame presentation has some okay colors though I did notice numerous instances of scratches while the Dolby Digital Mono track is serviceable with clear enough dialogue levels and the music/score comes through fairly nicely. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
Overall, while Vega$ wasn’t quality, or even consistent, entertainment, I did find this to be an enjoyable enough series that rode almost solely on Robert Urich’s charms, with honorable mentions toward Bart Braveman and Greg Morris, rather than the writing. The DVD released by Paramount is simple re-releases of the previous DVDs, just packaged together; no features were included. |
