On Dangerous Ground is probably not a well known movie in the film noir “genre” but offers solid performances from Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan and a compelling enough story to engage any fans, albeit this is not exactly a memorable movie on the whole.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
|
“Why do you make me do it?” New York cop Jim Wilson asks the hoodlum he’s about to smash senseless. Jim has seen it all on the city’s shadowy streets: killers, thugs, pimps, sadists. And the experience has cost him his soul. Ironically, his redemption may come in his next case, a brutal murder that brings him into the open sky and white light of the countryside… and into the arms of a beautiful blind woman. Directed by Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause, They Live by Night) and featuring a score by Bernard Herrmann (Psycho), On Dangerous Ground is a taut, rapid-paced manhunt with two fine stars at its tortured heart. Noir master Robert Ryan captures Jim’s agonized self-hatred. And Ida Lupino burnishes the screen as the sightless angel whose compassion gives him one last chance at life. (from back cover) |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5 |
The disc comes with an Audio Commentary with film historian Glenn Erickson who breaks down the genre and gives a background on the project, and the film’s Theatrical Trailer (2:10; HD). |
VIDEO – 4.25/5 |
On Dangerous Ground arrives on Blu-ray through Warner’s Archive Collection presented in its original 1.33 full frame aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. It’s a pleasant looking transfer showcasing nice and stark black levels where no signs of artifacts or aliasing is present and detail is sharp and well defined. |
AUDIO – 4.0/5 |
The included DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track is effective where dialogue comes through quite well while the score, by the aforementioned Bernard Herrmann, has nice clarity coming through the center channel. It’s nothing remarkable yet still impressive for a film going on 60+ years old and no doubt a fine upgrade over any previous DVD releases. |
OVERALL – 2.75/5 |
Overall, On Dangerous Ground is probably not a well known movie in the film noir “genre” but offers solid performances from Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan and a compelling enough story to engage any fans, albeit this is not exactly a memorable movie on the whole. The Blu-ray released through Warner’s Archive Collection has good video/audio transfers and at least includes an interesting commentary track. |
