“Justice League” remains one of the best animated series ever made with some great action scenes intermixed with compelling stories and character development rarely seen in the genre. This season is probably the best but the remaining two, under the title “Justice League Unlimited” are still fantastic viewing. With regards to the Blu-ray I’m happy to report we finally got a proper widescreen transfer.

The Superman: The Complete Anthology is a fine set for sure and while the features are certainly comprehensive between vintage featurettes and multiple expansive documentaries and commentaries, but in particular the video has much to be desired. This isn’t to say they don’t look good but compared with the work Fox did with their Alien complete set, this one pales by comparison.

All-Star Superman is a disappointment in that there was so much potential where you have The Man of Steel facing a certain death and we get a story that’s often clunky to go with voice casting for Superman himself which does not work at all, delivering flat and unemotional lines.

I can’t quite recommend this Blu-ray only because even with the other 3 shorts, it clocks in around 60-minutes which is still 10-15 minutes shorter than a feature-length DC Animated movie. I like that they did include commentaries for each short but I would’ve liked a featurette or two focusing on the animation process.

Although Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths isn’t my favorite of the DCU Animated movies that have come out to date, it’s still one hell of a sci-fi action movie. The voice talents are mostly acceptable – save for Baldwin’s wimpy Batman gruff – and the animation style, like in previous movies, is top notch.

I think what Bruce Timm did with not only “Justice League” but the others as well, was give an animated series that adults can appreciate and one’s that weren’t targeted at kids where the stories can be too simple and the jokes too lame. I still like “Batman” more since I have been a fan since I was 8 but “Justice League” is probably on another level both in terms of animation style and storylines. Read More…
