Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is a film I genuinely do not know if I hated because it was bad or loved because it was batsh*t insane, though I’m currently leaning toward the former.

Interstellar very well may be my favorite Christopher Nolan movie, perhaps even edging out The Dark Knight which is saying something from a Batman fan. The performance from Matthew McConaughey was magnificent and powerful and the story itself captivating.

The Lincoln Lawyer isn’t breaking any new ground in the legal thriller genre. The plot itself is less mystery and more character so those expecting some twist might be disappointed. That being said, as somebody who has never been enamored with Matthew McConaughey, here he’s near pitch perfect for the part.

Gold was something of a missed opportunity. The story in itself was interesting while the theme presented by director Stephen Gaghan has a familiar feel that we’ve seen numerous times before.

The Sea of Trees is a movie more about regret than loss or grief and while the screenplay could’ve used some work, the film itself is worthwhile if only to watch an excellent performance from Matthew McConaughey and to some extent, Naomi Watts even if her character is clichéd.

Free State of Jones was an ambitious film for Co-Writer/Director Gary Ross who tends to be a filmmaker who makes nice, uplifting, films (see Seabiscuit) and this is no exception, though given the subject, it should’ve been better. That said, McConaughey and Mahershala Ali turn in excellent performances.

“True Detective” is one hell of a series propelled with sharp writing, enough of mystery plot to keep one’s involvement and, most of all, incredible performances particularly from Matthew McConaughey who is yet again in top form and an amazing follow-up to his Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyer’s Club and for this, he’ll be in the race for an Emmy.

Amistad is another well made film from Steven Spielberg and features several good performances including Morgan Freeman, Djimon Hounsou and Matthew McConaughey who reminds you he’s always had the dramatic acting chops… The Blu-ray released by Paramount has good video/audio transfers but the features are much to be desired.

Dazed and Confused doesn’t quite live up to what I’ve heard about the film and yet there is a cool factor and a certain sense of nostalgia (though Linklater himself said that is not the intention) that makes this liberally boundless story so damn enjoyable through and through.

frailty

Frailty is a fine suspense-thriller that starts out strong but doesn’t hold up too well as it neared the end. It’s not because of the cast as both Bill Paxton and Matthew McConaughey, along with Matt O’Leary making his feature debut, all provide great and engrossing performances.
