My Science Project is somewhat of a gem, forgotten one at that, of the 1980s overshadowed by Back to the Future, Real Genius and Weird Science, the last two interestingly coming out the same year as MSP… Although it’s not as tightly written both in terms of plot and characters, it’s still a fun little flick.

Hackers isn’t exactly a good movie but still entertaining and of the movies from the ‘90s dealing with technology, like The Net, Johnny Mnemonic, Virtuosity, it certainly holds up better (by comparison), in fact pair it up with one of those to make for a fun double feature.

Although there is a coherent story for LOL, for whatever reason, while watching, something felt “off”. I’m not sure if it’s a translation thing going from French to English but whatever reason it results in a film featuring several melodramatic scenes which are utterly laughable rather than significantly effective. The cast isn’t too bad and that includes the much maligned Miley Cyrus and to be fair I can’t really see today’s top talented young actors being able to do much better with the material on hand.

Short Circuit 2 isn’t a great film but I think it’s probably on par with the original, not that that’s a huge feat. But the character that is Johnny Five makes this film work so well and during that key scene, your heart must be made out of stone if you didn’t feel at least something. This is one film that may not be a cult classic like other 1980s movies, but there is a certain charm to it.
