“Your worst fears are waiting…”

I can say, thankfully, that my own fears that this direct-to-video (well, it had a very limited release in December 09) suspense-drama wouldn’t deliver, be lost in the shuffle of the hundreds of others to come across my desk. Instead, I found Across the Hall to be a well made suspense yarn that, albeit predictable, still delivers the goods with a good cast including the late Brittany Murphy.

The Final Destination series has had a rough time since it started out nearly a decade ago. The first was met with a lukewarm reception at the box-office, the second didn’t do much either, and the third flick wasn’t exactly a money-maker for the studio. Then, an idea struck someone in the head, and said “why not put the movie in 3-D?” Well, whoever thought of that idea revived the ailing franchise, as the latest in the series, Final Destination 4 (or The Final Destination) is by far the best of the series to date. There are a few problems here and there, the short runtime being one of them, but this is definitely a 3-D feature you don’t want to miss out on.

The film takes a dramatic shift in tone 45 minutes into it – what was once a comical romp now turns into a full-blown action film. Thankfully I was able to adjust to the dramatic shift but I can see how it might put off some people.

I’m trying to figure out what went wrong with District 9. I’ve taken into consideration the fact that nearly everyone who’s seen it has told me how much they liked it. I’ve taken into consideration the fact that normally I hate everything everyone likes. I’ve even taken into consideration the fact that I’ve been on a hating streak of movies as of late.

It’s hard to believe that despite all the buzz that Jennifer’s Body received, mainly about this being Megan Fox’s big solo role away from those giant machines, it still flopped in theaters and performed well-below industry expectations. The flick managed to gross under $20 million worldwide its entire theatrical run, which caused concern not only for her career but also writer Diablo Cody’s as well. Thankfully, I’m here to tell you that this horror flick is actually more bite than bark and is a fun horror movie with violence. Oh, and Megan Fox is in it.

I’m being gracious by giving this film half a star, as though it was probably one of the worst movies I’ve seen in at least two days. The phenomenon that was Mike Judge is no more, as the last few of his flicks have tanked at the box-office and also with movie-goers all around. The characters suck, the jokes suck, and Ben Affleck’s character is slightly amusing.

Let me preface this review by saying that Ashley Greene is unbelievably gorgeous. You may read during this review, many times if I counted right, that I say she is incredibly cute. Oh, and she’s in this movie called Summer’s Moon about… something important but I forget because Greene is hot.

A simple plot seemingly went a long way with this film since it made a ton of dough at the box office. And while some of it is clearly warranted, I really don’t see how this became the smash-hit with people calling it the best film of 2009.

I vaguely remember a conversation with a friend of mine when The Hangover was released, and the conversation was about how I thought the movie would be a complete bomb. The fact that the cast was relatively unknown, the premise seemed ridiculous, and also it just didn’t appear to be funny to me from the trailers were the main reasons I considered it to flop. Little did I know that the film would go on to make more than $450,000,000 worldwide and spawn another sequel slated for 2011.

deadline

In the latest in the line of direct-to-video horror-thrillers, Deadline pits two actresses who were on the rise in the late 90s/early 2000s, only to falter and rely on half-assed screenplays. […] However, neither actress has really risen to those lofty levels taking on some decent supporting roles […], before starring in some fairly lousy direct-to-video entries including The Ramen Girl and the incredibly awful Train.

terminator4-2

There comes a time when a film series just needs to stop. Take for example, the lucrative Harry Potter franchise. We will soon be done with those, but after the third one the movies for me at least got stale and stopped being fun for me. That of course, was a transition, which I just recently learned about. See, I’m going to tell you about how the latest into the Terminator movies, aptly titled Terminator Salvation, is going to be the end all for the franchise. So yes fans of the film, Bale won’t be back… hopefully.

farcry-reborn2

FAR CRY: Why. Just freaking why. The movie business is bad enough these days, and yet somehow Uwe Boll still gets money to make movies? Can someone just give me $10 million and I’ll give them a return on their investment? I’ll invest in those Zhu-Zhu pets or something like that. Did anyone learn their lesson when they gave him money for Bloodrayne? Then five movies later, he’s still churning them out at a rapid pace. Far Cry is based off the “Best Selling Videogame” but last time I checked, the game wasn’t a best seller and this movie is fairly loosely based off of it. Sigh, here we go again.

REBORN: I don’t say this very often, but there comes a time when a movie shouldn’t show so much nudity. Reborn, in fact, is one of those films. It takes “torture porn” films to a new level, and that level is called terrible. The movie has so much violence, nudity, and just plain stupidity that even I couldn’t find this a smidge noticeable (that says a lot). If I could, I would have much rather watched a G-rated version where this wasn’t so much female nudity in it.

fourchristmases

I just don’t get Vince Vaughn. He’s one of those actors that somehow manage to be in a bunch of movies, yet they are all pretty much the same dang movie. He’s somehow hopelessly in love with a girl but it takes the entire movie for some chick to realize how much she loves him, or some sort of combination of love and not loving someone. Four Christmases doesn’t stray too much from his comedy genre, so if you’ve seen one Vaughn or Witherspoon flick, odds are you’ve seen them all.

echo

I can’t really figure out what I didn’t like about this movie. I was trying to like it for the first half, but then literally just gave up after that. The story is really convoluted and pointless for the most part, as are most horror flicks, there’s just something missing here. Oh that’s right, character development. You don’t just throw someone into a story about involuntary manslaughter and expect audiences to feel sympathy for the main character right away. Sure, they might feel a little compassion for the kid. Aside from that though, won’t most people just be cheering for his upcoming death scene that you know isn’t too far away? Read More…

commandperformance

Everyone’s favorite action superstar Dolph Lundgren returns in yet another action-packed smash hit known as Command Performance. There’s not much else to say here, except for the fact that his latest is just like his past film I had to review, which I can’t remember the name of but I do remember it was good and violent. Okay, it was violent.

justiceleague

I think what Bruce Timm did with not only “Justice League” but the others as well, was give an animated series that adults can appreciate and one’s that weren’t targeted at kids where the stories can be too simple and the jokes too lame. I still like “Batman” more since I have been a fan since I was 8 but “Justice League” is probably on another level both in terms of animation style and storylines. Read More…

Taking of Pelham 123

There’s always a problem in today’s Hollywood market of actors and actresses of being typecast to the point of me not wanting to see a film. For example, is it believable to see someone like Sacha Baron Cohen in a love flick? Or Leonardo DiCaprio in a film that doesn’t have a sinking boat? Not really, so that brings me to the remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. Travolta and Washington, as the good and bad guy respectively, are amazing in their roles here in the film. The issue here is the fact that it’s something we’ve seen before. Read More…
