Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunter had an interesting and different premise but from the beginning it never quite found its footing. For one thing, I didn’t buy Renner and Arterton in their roles although the script didn’t help matters so their performances are somewhat forgivable. All told, sadly this is a downright forgettable movie with nothing to offer except for Famke Janssen’s hammy, yet fun, performance.

Life of Pi is a powerful drama featuring a wonderful performance from Suraj Sharma and some of the best 3D and visual effects perhaps since Avatar. Ang Lee has yet another winner with a seemingly simple story that presents some semi-complex undertones. The 3D Blu-ray combo set offers up excellent bonus features that will keep you busy for a couple hours.

Wreck-it-Ralph is a great animated-comedy-adventure the entire family will enjoy and, at least for the past couple of years, rivals some of Pixar’s own works. It’s a fresh and imaginative story and the animation is wonderful. That being said, while the audio/video transfers are phenomenal, this unfortunately did not get the same treatment as most Pixar home releases do in terms of features. There’s a nice making-of featurette but its standard and the deleted scenes aren’t anything amazing. However, if solely buying based on the movie (who in the hell does that anymore?!?!), its well worth the purchase price.

Monsters, Inc. is a great film that the entire family can enjoy. The story is cute and the voice talent Pixar puts together is once again done to perfection. This 3D Blu-ray combo pack offers up a nice 3D presentation but surprisingly also has a new lossless audio track upgrading from 5.1 channels to 7.1. The features are mostly the same with the exception of adding the Toy Story Tunes short film.

Silent Hill Revelation is the latest horror/thriller to come down the pike where filmmakers throw random crap at the screen and then try to stuff it all into a half-assed screenplay and story in the hopes nobody would care or notice especially if they pay lip service to a certain demographic. Personally, I got very little out of the movie as most of the scenes were gross rather than scary which only led to something that was dreadfully boring and forgettable.

Frankweenie didn’t do much for me both on an emotional level or general entertainment. The voice talents are fine but the story was too stretched out and got a bit tedious towards the end. That being said, if you’re a fan of Burton’s previous works or love stop-motion, there are worse ways to spend 90-minutes and a rental fee. The Blu-ray combo set offers up gorgeous video and audio transfers but the features are much to be desired.

Dredd is an amazing sci-fi action/thriller that seems to finally get the character right. The action is incredible, the visual effect top notch and Karl Urban, given very little to work with, is effective in the title role. The Blu-ray might falter with the features but the video and audio transfers are both remarkable making this worthy of purchasing.

Although hardly a great sequel even when compared with the others, Ice Age: Continental Drift overcomes any problems with a thin plot with at least a modestly fun adventure with likeable characters and jokes which mostly hit the mark. No, it’s not remotely close to anything Pixar has put out or even DreamWorks Animation for that matter, but since it only clocks in at 88-minutes, it’s a breezy flick to watch on a slow afternoon which the entire family can enjoy.

If not for the lack of features, Bolt on Blu-ray could’ve easily been a 4.5 star release. The audio and video are both fantastic and the movie itself is one of the better non-Pixar animated movies I’ve seen in a while (CG and traditional alike). The great thing about these recent Disney releases is, if you have kids the bonus DVD copy is an excellent bonus and can go to friends’ homes and watch it there if you like without having to come across as a snob that you only own a Blu-ray player…

Cars 2 is proof that no studio is perfect and they all have missteps and hopefully this will be Pixar’s only one for the next 10 years. When it comes to the movie itself, there is some charming moments but they are too far and between and usually interrupted by Mater’s annoying persona.

G-Force may not be the best in terms of kid’s movies to come out recently, but it is a decent affair that most will enjoy. There are a few jokes here and there for parents to enjoy although this is a movie that will portray to mostly the younger children. The technical package is reference material in terms of the audio while the 3D video is OK – but nothing special – and the features are outstanding.

Toy Story 3 is a heartwarming, bittersweet and funny film that both kids and adults will absolutely love – and I would argue that the adults may find a more emotional impact especially if you were a child when the first film was released. The 3D Blu-ray itself has incredible video and audio which is to no surprise for a Pixar/Disney release.

This Toy Story 2 3D Blu-ray set is something else. A fantastic movie with incredible audio and very good 3D video presentations (not to mention excellent 2D video) yet the special features hold it back from becoming one of the best Blu-rays released on the whole. If, however, features are not your thing, then this is a no-brainer and even so, it’s still a must-have for anyone’s high-def collection.

If for some reason you haven’t seen Toy Story or you haven’t seen it in years, there’s no better time to see it again, now in Blu-ray high-def with some decent extras to keep you occupied, plus both the audio and video are top notch and well worth the upgrade. With regards to the 3D Blu-ray, it was surprising to see something that was post converted to 3D looked so good.
