The Walking Dead never was must-watch television for me and going on eight seasons, although it is certainly entertaining and engaging, I can’t say I’ll really watch it live nor do I find myself deeply invested with these characters, though the acting generally is strong.

SEASON SYNOPSIS

Together with the Hilltop and the Kingdom, Rick (ANDREW LINCOLN) and the Alexandrians bring “All Out War” to Negan (JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN) and his forces. The Saviors are larger, better equipped, and ruthless, but Rick and the united communities are fighting for the promise of a brighter future. The battle lines are drawn as they launch into a kinetic, action-packed offensive.

Up until now, survival has been the focus of Rick and our group, but it’s not enough. They have to fight to take back their freedom so that they can live. So that they can rebuild. As with any battle, there will be losses. Casualties. But with Rick leading the Alexandrian forces, Maggie (LAUREN COHAN) leading the Hilltop, and King Ezekiel (KHARY PAYTON) leading the Kingdom, Negan and the Saviors’ grup on this world may finally be coming to an end.

Carl Grimes: Leaving a Legacy (8:47; HD) is a send-off featurette on the character portrayed by Chandler Riggs.

In Memoriam (9:57; HD) looks at the various deaths over the eighth season.

The Price of War (10:34; HD) examines the theme of the season.

VIDEO – 4.0/5

The Walking Dead is shown in its originally televised 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer and while I don’t watch this series live, it probably is on par with perhaps better detail (from the OTA 720p resolution). Despite this being a rather dark show, there are splashes of natural looking tones and detail itself is sharp and well defined throughout.

AUDIO – 4.5/5

Each episode is accompanied with a strong Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track which is on par with previous season releases. Dialogue sounds crisp as do the actual walking dead and their groans. The track does come to life courtesy of the front and rear channels with ambient noises and off-screen elements.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, The Walking Dead never was must-watch television for me and going on eight seasons, although it is certainly entertaining and engaging, I can’t say I’ll really watch it live nor do I find myself deeply invested with these characters, though the acting generally is strong. The Blu-ray release offers good video/audio transfers and an okay selection of bonus features.
